Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars hang tough, ultimately fall to SUNY Maritime 3-0 in non-conference affair

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team dropped its second consecutive match to begin the 2024 campaign, falling Wednesday evening to the Privateers of SUNY Maritime by a score of 3-0. The non-conference clash took place at Reinhart Field in Throggs Neck, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars are now 0-2, while SUNY Maritime improved to 1-0-1 on the year.

The Privateers opened the scoring in the 20th minute of play when Jack Young's through ball through ball along the backline was mishandled by Medgar Evers goalkeeper Clirian Nunez before ending up in the goal. Young later contributed to the home squad's second tally, as his corner kick in the 66th minute found Alex Arriola, who headed the ball into the net to increase the Privateers' edge to 2-0.

SUNY Maritime capped the scoring for the evening in the 75th minute, when PJ Kakalos registered an unassisted tally to make it 3-0 Privateers.

The Privateers dominated the match offensively, recording a team total of 29 shots, including 13 on-goal. Medgar Evers registered just a pair of shots on the night, including one apiece from Oscar Garcia (on-goal) and veteran Hamou Soumare.

Nunez, despite allowing the three goals, put forth a strong effort in net, keeping the Cougars in the match all evening by earning 10 saves.

Medgar Evers will return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will play its home opener against non-conference borough foe Pratt Institute. The match will take place at Old Boys High School Field (Brooklyn, NY), with a start-time of 4:00pm.
