Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Freshman Jimmy Luna scores goal as Cougars settle for 1-1 tie against Cannoneers

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team competed in its home opener on Saturday afternoon, earning a 1-1 tie against non-conference borough foe Pratt Institute. The match took place at the No. 10 field at Randall's Island Park. With the result, both schools moved to records of 0-2-1 on the 2024 campaign.

The Cougars got on the scoreboard first, finding the back of the net in the 11th minute. Veteran Belco Guendeba's shot was stopped by Cannoneers goalkeeper Anil Pugh, but Medgar Evers freshman Jimmy Luna was there to capitalize on the rebound, tapping the ball into the right side of the net to give the hosts the 1-0 edge.

Other than Luna's goal, neither team earned much in the way of opportunities throughout the opening 45 minutes of action, with Pratt registering just five shots (none on goal), and the Cougars earning just three shots on net, and four overall.

Pratt dominated the opening 25 minutes of the second session, out-shooting Medgar Evers 12-1 during that span, eventually netting the tying tally in the 70th minute when Vengkheang Meng lifted a ball into the air that was headed in by Dylan Costa. That made the score 1-1.

After the visitors netted the equalizer, Medgar Evers turned up the intensity, peppering five shots on net down the stretch, all of which were saved by Pratt's second-half goalkeeper Dimitris Papagiannakopoulos to preserve the tie. Pratt Institute had an opportunity to net the game-winner in the closing minutes, earning a corner kick and registering a pair of shots, both of which were deflected by Cougar defenders. Neither team was able to notch a second goal, with the foes settling for a 1-1 deadlock.

In what was a competitive match, Pratt held a sizable 24-10 edge in the shots category, though only five of those aforementioned 24 slashes were on net. Nine of the Cougars' 10 shots on the afternoon were on-goal.

Cougars goalkeeper Clirian Nunez made four saves on the day. Pugh made two for the Cannoneers, with Papagiannakopoulos collecting six.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Wednesday afternoon, September 11, as the Cougars will host the University of Valley Forge at Astoria Park in Astoria, NY. Start-time is scheduled for 3:00pm.
