Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer defeats Patriots 1-0, earns first victory of 2024 thanks to stellar collective effort

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team picked up its first victory of the 2024 campaign on Wednesday afternoon, putting together a stellar defensive effort to defeat the Patriots of the University of Valley Forge by a score of 1-0. The non-conference clash took place at Astoria Park in Astoria, NY. With the victory, the Cougars are now 1-2-1 on the season, while the Patriots dipped to 2-3.

The lone goal of the game, which turned out to be the match-winning tally, came via a connection of two Medgar Evers freshmen, as Juan Lima swung a pass to Jaden Anderson in front of the net, and Anderson proceeded to tap the ball home, past Valley Forge netminder Juan Garcia Flores. The teams combined for 14 total shots in the opening half, with the Cougars registering nine, the Patriots five.

In the second half, Valley Forge owned a 6-2 shots advantage, and peppered five shots on net, including four inside the final 27 minutes of action, but Cougars standout goalkeeper Clirian Nunez was up to the task, stopping all of them. In his last three matches, Nunez has registered an impressive G.A.A. of 1.33.

For the match, the teams registered 11 shots apiece, and Medgar Evers earned five corner kick opportunities, compared to three for the opposition. The Cougars were whistled for 17 fouls on the evening, compared to five for the visitors.

Medgar Evers will look to make it two victories in a row this Saturday, as the Cougars will head back on the road to battle SUNY Old Westbury. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 11:00am.
