Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars undone by Panthers' second half scoring barrage as Old Westbury comes away with 3-0 victory

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team suffered a non-conference defeat on Saturday, falling to SUNY Old Westbury by a score of 3-0 at Panther Park. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 1-3-1 overall on the year, while the Panthers improved to a mark of 3-2.

Medgar Evers and SUNY Old Westbury combined for 12 shots in the opening half. For the Cougars, they registered seven, including four on-goal, all of which were saved by Panthers netminder Paul DeGennaro. Old Westbury recorded five shots, with all of those off-target. At the conclusion of 45 minutes of action, the teams were scoreless.

The opening goal of the match came at 48:59, when Old Westbury's Ismael Ruiz rocketed a ball home off a feed from Jose Sandoval. That put the Panthers ahead 1-0. The hosts increased their advantage to two goals when Sandoval netted an unassisted tally at 73:12. Sandoval would strike again later, scoring his second goal of the match and giving his squad a 3-0 edge after slipping a ball home at 83:51 (from Henrik Ropstad and Tyler Tesoriere). SUNY Old Westbury would go on to win by that aforementioned 3-0 tally.

For the match, SUNY Old Westbury held a 17-9 edge in shots, while also earning seven corner kick opportunities compared to two for the Cougars. DeGennaro earned the shutout, making five saves in the process. His counterpart, Medgar Evers' Clirian Nunez, stopped three shots in taking the loss.

The Cougars will return to action on Monday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the Athletic Field at Marillac in Riverdale, NY to battle the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
