Despite hearty effort, Cougars outlasted by Valley Forge University in five sets in non-conference action

The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team suffered a tough loss on Monday evening despite putting forth a valiant effort, falling to the Patriots of the University of Valley Forge by scores of 8-25, 25-21, 25-15, 24-26, and 13-15. The match took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers is now 0-2 on the 2024 campaign, while Valley Forge University improved to 1-5.

Veteran Britonya Lloyd was stellar for the Cougars, posting a match-high 12 digs, tying for match-highs of 11 kills and seven service aces, and leading all players with a pair of solo blocks. She hit .310 on the evening (11-2-29), as well. Adacia Scotland and Jennifer Metra contributed four kills apiece, with Scotland adding a team-high six assists to go along with four digs. Metra added four service and four digs, as well. Finally, it was Raine Williams contributing nine digs, five assists, and three service aces.

The Patriots were led by Madelyn Oakley's 11 kills, which tied for the match-high. She also contributing 10 assists while tying for the match-high of seven service aces, and contributing six digs. Telia Robinson and Jada Flint finished with six kills apiece, with Robinson also finalizing her evening with seven digs. Flint contributed three service aces on the evening, as well. Rhena Lauver finished her evening with five kills, seven service aces, seven digs, and four assists. Kaitlyn Haley's 16 digs led all players, and Abigail Sumego's 12 assists were a match-high.

Medgar Evers kept things close momentarily in the opening set, trailing just 13-7, but the Patriots closed the set on a 12-1 run to win it, 25-8. During that aforementioned spurt, the visitors used four service aces, including a pair by Oakley, and two by Haley. Flint and Lauver each had a kill apiece during the run as well.

Leading 4-3 in set number two, the Cougars rattled off five consecutive points to take a commanding 9-3 advantage. That run was highlighted by a pair of Aliyah Chapman service aces, and a kill by Scotland. After the Patriots scored four consecutive points to pull to within two at 9-7, the Cougars scored four of the following six to find themselves ahead 13-9. Valley Forge then went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by four Oakley service aces, to take a 15-13 edge.

Later, trailing 16-14 and being in danger of falling behind 2-0 in sets, Medgar Evers rallied, scoring the next six points to take a 20-16 lead. A bad set by Lauver, and five consecutive Patriots attack errors account for those Cougars points. Medgar Evers eventually led 24-19, but Valley Forge survived set-point twice, pulling to within 24-21 thanks to a kill by Flint and a bad set by Scotland. On the next serve, however, Flint put the ball into the net, tying the match at one set apiece.

With the teams deadlocked at seven points apiece in set number three, Medgar Evers scored the next seven to catapult ahead by a score of 14-7. That aforementioned run featured three services aces by Metra. After Valley Forge scored two straight to halt the bleeding, three consecutive Patriots errors put the Cougars back up eight, 17-9. Medgar Evers notched seven of the next 11 points to take a 24-13 edge. After Valley Forge staved off defeat by denying the Cougars set-point for two straight points, the Cougars solidified a 2-1 lead in sets on Scotland's kill.

In the fourth set, the Cougars showed tremendous resiliency, battling back from being down 6-1, 14-9, and 19-13 to tie the set at 22-apiece. A service error by Medgar Evers' Maritza Argueta, and a service ace by Haley put the visitors on the cusp of deadlocking the sets at two apiece, as Valley Forge led 24-22. After the Cougars battled back to tie the set at 24-all with a Lloyd kill and a Williams service ace, the Patriots notched the final two points to take the set.

With the Cougars trailing 6-5 in the fifth set, Medgar Evers rattled off four straight points, highlighted by a pair of kills by Lloyd, and a service ace by Metra, to take a 9-6 advantage. Medgar Evers later led 13-11, but Valley Forge University finished the set and match strong, scoring four straight points to win it, thanks to a Lloyd service error and three consecutive service aces by Sumego.

Both teams struggled with their attack percentages for the evening, hitting in the negative. The Patriots hit -.036 (33-37-111), while the hosts hit -.012 (20-21-82). Valley Forge held a 33-20 edge in kills, and a 28-17 advantage in service aces. Medgar Evers did earn a pair of solo blocks and a pair of block assists, while the Patriots failed to record any.

Medgar Evers will return to the court on Wednesday evening, as the Cougars travel to Lehman's APEX Center for a non-conference match. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
