Cross country teams open 2024 campaigns by competing in Vassar College's Ron Stonitsch Invitational

The Medgar Evers men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2024 campaigns on Saturday morning, putting forth some hearty efforts at Vassar College's Ron Stonitsch Invitational. The meet took place at the Vassar Farm in Poughkeepsie, NY. Both squads finished 11th out of 11 competing squads, but the student-athletes gave it their all, showing tremendous potential for the new campaign.

"I am very excited to have started our Cross-Country Season at the Vassar Ron Stonitsch Invitational," Head Coach Hugh Reid said. "This was an interesting start as we lined up several freshmen and sophomores. The students pushed themselves in the heat and put forth a solid collective effort given the circumstances. Our women's squad was led by 2023 CUNYAC All-star and Rookie of the Year Kenia Irish-Bramble, who is shaking off the rust and working her way back into fitness.  We also had standout performances by sophomore Aaliyah Barthlomew and freshman Shaniya Chung. The men's team was paced by newcomer Jose Janvier. He paced the team with a sub-30-minute performance. Finally, freshman Reco Griffith put forth a notable performance for his first cross country collegiate meet."

In the women's 5K meet, Irish-Bramble was the first Cougar to cross the finish line, placing 78th overall with a time of 25:54.1, and Bartholomew was the second Medgar Evers runner to cross the tape, coming in 82nd (27:05.8). Rounding out the female Cougar runners were Jada Lambert (95th place, 31:18.7), Shaniya Chung (96th place, 31:21.6), and Thenica Thompson (97th place, 31:24.8).

The Medgar Evers men's squad was led by newcomer Jose Janvier, as he placed 91st overall in the 6K race, finishing with a sub-30-time of 29:56.3. Coming in almost exactly one minute later was his teammate, fellow freshman Reco Griffith, who registered a 93rd-place finish with a time of 30:56.4 Denzel Pineda was the third Cougar to cross the tape (99th overall, 33:31.7), and rounding out the Medgar Evers contingent of runners were Nicholas Winns (100th overall, 34:00.4) and veteran Rupert Luard-Charles (102nd, 34:53.1).

The Cougars will return to action on Friday evening, as the teams will travel to Green Lane (Ewing, NJ) to compete in the Herb Lorenz Invitational. Start-times for the meets are scheduled for 5:30pm.
