Men's soccer defeated by Five Towns College; Newcomer John Amady scores goal despite loss

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team dropped its third consecutive match, falling to the Sound of Five Towns College by a score of 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. The match took place in Dix Hill, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to 1-4-1 on the 2024 campaign, while the Sound improved to 4-2-1.

Five Towns College dominated the match from start to finish. Christian Alvarez netted the first goal of the afternoon, capitalizing on a beautiful lead pass from Allela Bouzgarrou before blasting the ball past Cougars netminder Isaac Akindipe to gives the hosts a 1-0 edge. The Sound increase its advantage to 2-0 when Anthony Campos slashed home Sebastian Cuenca at 22:11.

Medgar Evers got on the board when newcomer John Amady found the back of the net, slicing Five Towns College's two-goal lead to one, 2-1, at 24:45. That would be the final goal scored of the opening half for either squad.

Gabriel Santos (from Andre Hickling) scored in the opening stages of the second half (47:16) to increase the Sound's edge to 3-1. Five Towns would get three more goals during the half, one from Hector Ruiz (63:17, from John Ponsanti), Alvarez (72:45, from Hector Ruiz), and Angel Chavez (75:16).

Five Towns College's Jose Garcia got the start, allowing just one goal and getting the victory. His replacement, Eduardo Martinez, logged 45 minutes and did not face a shot. Cougars goalkeeper Isaac Akindipe allowed six goals while stopping 10 shots in taking the defeat.

The Sound registered a whopping 34 shots on the afternoon compared to just three for the Cougars. Five Towns College also held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

Medgar Evers College will return to action on Monday afternoon, as the Cougars will travel to Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field in Jersey City, NJ to take on the NJCU Gothic Knights. Start-time for the non-conference clash is scheduled for 3:45pm.
