Men's soccer defeated by Gothic Knights in non-conference action at Robert L. McNulty Memorial Field

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team lost a non-conference match on Monday afternoon, falling to the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University by a score of 5-0. The match took place at Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field in Jersey City, NJ. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 1-5-1 on the 2024 campaign, while the hosts improved to 6-1-2.

NJCU struck first in this one in the 14th minute. After JP Crespo was fouled inside the box, Lucca Cardone cashed in on a penalty kick, blasting the ball home to make it 1-0 in favor of the Gothic Knights. The hosts peppered a plethora of shots on net, but Cougars netminder Clirian Nunez kept the match close, stopping four shots to keep his team's deficit at a goal. The Gothic Knights finally broke through for another tally with 10 seconds remaining in the half. Off of a corner kick, Ryan Villegas, who was on the near side of the box, tapped the ball in front for Carlos Perez who converted on a score just before the first half buzzer.

The Gothic Knights put the match away during an impressive three-minute span in the second half. Dom Celi scored an unassisted goal in the 67th minute, and, 1:24 later, Tommy Louis blasted home Thiago Duarte's feed to make it 4-0. NJCU put an exclamation point on the barrage of goals in the 69th minute, when Jorkaef Fallas tapped home Fabrizio Urena's pass to make it 5-0. That aforementioned fifth goal would signal the end of the offense on either side for the day.

NJCU held a 33-4 edge in shots, while also earning 14 corner kick opportunities compared to one for Medgar Evers.

Medgar Evers goalkeeper Clirian Nunez, despite allowing the five goals, stopped eight shots on the afternoon, boosting his season total to 49 in seven matches, an average of seven per match. His counterpart, Dominic Cunha, earned the victory, logging 71:56 of action and making one stop in back of a stellar team defense.

The Cougars will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the team travels to Jamaica, NY to battle York College in a non-conference contest. Start-time at York's Outdoor Athletic Complex is scheduled for 12:00pm.
