Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars' balanced effort leads to impressive 3-1 road victory over York College

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team picked up an impressive victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Cardinals of York College by a score of 3-1. The match took place at York's Athletic Complex in Jamaica, NY. With the triumph, the Cougars improved to a mark of 2-6-1, while the Cardinals dipped to a record of 2-6-1.

Neither team mustered much offense in the opening 20 minutes of the contest, with the squads combining for just four shots during that span. The Cougars nearly claimed a 1-0 edge in the 24th minute when newcomer Pelumi Atkinson's blast ricocheted off the cross bar. Three minutes later, freshman Bertini Jean slashed a ball home to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. That would be the lone goal of the opening session, with the Cougars taking that aforementioned slim edge into the half.

In the 58th minute, Jean struck again, as his long shot soared into the net to increased the Cougars' edge to 2-0. Medgar Evers' Juan Lima tapped home a feed from Belco Guendeba at 65:07 to take a commanding three-goal lead.

The Cardinals were able to get on the board in the 76th minute when Stanley Sanchez recorded a goal – the only goal allowed by Clirian Nunez – to slice York's deficit to 3-1. Despite a late push from the Cardinals, the Cougars' defense and Nunez stayed stingy, holding on for an impressive two-goal win.

Medgar Evers held a 23-16 advantage in shots as well as shots-on-goal (9-4), while both teams earned six corner kicks. Nunez earned the victory in goal for the Cougars, yielding just one goal while making three saves. His counterpart, George Molina, took the loss between the pipes, allowing three goals while making two saves.

The Cougars will return to action Monday evening, travel to Yonkers, NY to take on the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence. Start time at Fleming Field is scheduled for 7:00pm.
