Cougars split pair of matches, sweeping Cardinals before dropping three-setter to Patriots

The Medgar Evers College men's women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon, defeating the York College Cardinals in three sets by scores of 25-23, 25-21, and 25-17, before falling to the Patriots of Valley Forge University by scores of 16-25, 23-25, and 20-25. The matches took place at the Pit in Phoenixville, PA.

With the 1-1 output, the Cougars are now 1-7 on the 2024 campaign, and York College dipped to 1-5 on the season. As part of the tri-match, the clash between Medgar Evers and York College did not count towards the CUNYAC standings. In the meantime, the Patriots improved to 2-8.

In the victory for the Cougars against the Cardinals, veteran Jennifer Metra dazzled, registering a match-high nine kills while swatting .304 on the afternoon (9-2-23). Britonya Lloyd also put forth a great effort, recording eight kills while hitting .368 (8-1-19). Her nine digs also tied for the match high. Maritza Argueta tied Lloyd with nine digs, and Adacia Scotland's four assists led all Cougars.

York College was paced by Alicia Gumbs' team-best six kills (6-0-15, .400). Jachimma Onwuamaegbu finished with five kills, and Maritza Ortega Ramirez added four kills and four digs. Samantha Panameno's 17 digs led all players, and she also added a pair of digs.

In the opening set, with Medgar Evers College trailing 12-11, the Cougars scored five consecutive points to open up a 16-12 edge. A Metra kill, an ace by Aliyah Chapman, and two Cardinals hitting errors highlighted that aforementioned Medgar run. York then stormed back with four straight points to knot the set at 16-all.

Medgar Evers scored two straight to go up 18-16, before York rattled off four in a row to snatch a 20-18 edge. Later, with the Cardinals leading 23-20, the Cougars staged an incredible rally, notching five consecutive points to win the set in thrilling fashion, 25-23. Lloyd earned a kill during that final spurt, with a pair of Cardinals setting errors wrapping the set up.

In the second set, Medgar Evers held a 21-18 lead before the Cardinals earned the ensuing three points to knot things up at 21-all. A Panameno service ace capped that aforementioned run. Just as they did in the opening set, the Cougars dominated play late, earning the final four points of the set to win it, 25-21, and take a 2-0 lead for the match. During that latter stretch of points for the Cougars in set two, Chapman registered a kill, with Lloyd's kill serving as the set-winner.

Medgar Evers held a slim 17-16 edge in set three before scoring eight of the final nine points of the set to win it, 25-17, and earn a sweep for the match. Metra recorded a pair of kills during that final push, with Lloyd also earning one. For the Cougars, it was their first victory of the 2024 campaign, a triumph well-deserved.

For the match, Medgar Evers College hit .169 (21-10-65), while the Cardinals hit a cut below, earning a .108 swatting percentage (25-16-83). The Cougars held a modest 7-6 edge in the service aces category, while also minimally leading the way in digs, 29-28. The Cardinals were the more cohesive unit in assists, with York piling 19 helpers to Medgar Evers' 10.

In the Cougars' loss to Valley Forge University, Lloyd tied for the match-high of four kills while swatting .154 for the match (4-2-13). The standout also piled nine digs, which was a match-best. Metra added three kills, a team-high three service aces, and three digs, and Argueta finalized the match with two kills, a pair of assists, two service aces, and two digs. Chapman's five digs were a team-best, and Scotland's four assists led the Cougars.

Three players earned four kills for the Patriots, including Abigail Sumego, Genesis Gasca, and Telia Robinson. Sumego also recorded a match-high eight assists to go along with five service aces, and Gasca earned five digs. Madeline Oakley's seven digs led all players, as did her six service aces. The standout also contributed four assists, as well.

The Patriots led 15-14 in the first set, before running away with it. Six straight points by the hosts, including four service aces by Mattayah Lyndaker, put Valley Forge University up 21-14. After the Cougars clawed back with two consecutive points, including a Torey Richards kill, the Patriots closed out the set with four straight, including a kill by Jada Flint, consecutive service aces by Oakley, and a set-winning kill by Rhena Lauver.

In what was a very competitive second set, the Cougars held a commanding 18-14 edge before Valley Forge rallied with six consecutive points to catapult ahead by a score of 20-18. Oakley highlighted that run with a pair of service aces, and Gasca also sprinkled in a kill. Medgar battled back, notching two in a row to knot the set at 20-all.

Valley Forge then scored four consecutive points, courtesy of a kill and a service ace by Gasca, an attack error by Sarah Vallon, and a kill by Robinson. The Cougars showed tremendous heart, denying the Patriots set-point three straight times, as Sumego committed a pair of hitting errors, and Metra registered a service ace. Valley Forge would then finally close out the set when Metra serve the ball out, as the Patriots captured the set 25-23, and went up 2-0 for the match.

In the third and final set of the match, the Patriots rallied from a 10-7 deficit to go on a 13-2 run, taking a commanding 20-12 advantage. Medgar Evers did close to within five points at 23-18, but the squads would split the final four points, with the hosts capturing the final set 25-20, and sweeping the match.

The Patriots defeated the Cougars despite hitting -.027 (20-22-73). Medgar Evers hit .113 despite the loss (13-8-44). Valley Forge held a commanding edge in the service aces column, registering 23 to the Cougars' seven. Medgar Evers held a slim 25-23 lead in digs.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to Baruch's ARC Arena to battle the Bearcats. Start-time for the CUNYAC clash is set for 6:00pm.
