Cougars compete in Herb Lorenz Invitational, set multiple personal records

The Medgar Evers cross country teams resumed their 2024 campaigns on Friday evening, competing in the Herb Lorenz Invitational in Ewing, NJ (Green Lane). The invite was hosted by the College of New Jersey. The Cougars' women's squad finished seventh out of eight teams, with the men's unit finishing eighth out of eight. Both squads showed tremendous improvement and unparalleled heart as they continue to trend upward.

"In terms of improvement, our student-athletes did a tremendous job today, giving us a glimpse of what is yet to come," Head Coach Hugh Reid said. "Several personal-best times were recorded today, with eight runners accomplishing the feat. I am very proud of the progress these student-athletes are making, and I'm excited about continuing to see the athletes progress and come into their own."

On the women's side, veteran Kenia Irish-Bramble was the first Cougar to cross the finish line, finishing 56th overall with a time of 24:27.5. Aaliyah Bartholomew was the second Medgar Evers participant to complete the 5K course, coming in 60th place overall with a time of 25:53.1. Nana Samake was the third Cougar to finish the race (63rd overall, 28:14.4). The final two Medgar Evers runners were Shaniya Chung (65th overall, 29:34.7) and Thenica Thompson (67th overall, 30:35.4). Bartholomew and Chung set two-minute personal record, Thompson set a one-minute personal record, and Keyona Evans who didn't score but came in 74th overall, set a three-minute PR.

For the Cougars men's team, Jahiem Johnson dazzled, as he was the first Medgar Evers runner to complete the 6K course (49th overall) with a time of 26:59.1. Adeolu Adeyemi was the second Cougar to cross the tape, finishing 54th overall (28:29.5). Cameron Nelson (57th overall, 29:07), Rupert Luard-Charles (58th overall, 30:15.3), and Joshua Felix (60th overall, 31:47.2) finished third, fourth, and fifth respectively for the Medgar men. Dontay Washington, who finished 65th overall, set a five-minute personal record. Luard Charles set a new four-minute PR. Johnson's pace translated to a new two-minute personal record, and Nicholas Winns (63rd overall) set a one-minute PR.

The Medgar Evers cross country teams will return to action next Saturday, as the teams will compete in the Fred Pavlich Invitational. The meet will take place at Montomgery Place in Annadale-on-Hudson, NY, with a start-time of 10:30am.
