Men's and women's cross country teams put forth stellar effort at Fred Pavlich Invitational

The Medgar Evers College men's and women's cross country teams continued to improve towards the stretch run of the 2024 campaign as they competed this past Saturday at the Fred Pavlich Invitational at Montgomery Place (Annadale-on-Hudson, NY). The Cougars' women's squad finished ninth out of 14 participating schools, while the men came in 11th out of 11. Head Coach Hugh Reid spoke glowingly of the teams following the completion of the meet.

"The Fred Pavlich Invitational is always a fun, yet challenging meet, and this year was no exception," Reid said. "The course was difficult, but we rose to the occasion and put forth a solid performance across the board. Our women's team was led by freshman standout Saviah Williams, who performed exceptionally in her first collegiate meet. Kenia Irish-Bramble also ran a strong 6K opener for our team. Overall as a team, the women have some work to do, but I believe they'll continue to improve, and I expect by the time the CUNY's role around, the team will qualify for Regionals. As for the men, Jahiem Johnson and newcomer Joshua Felix paced us in the 8K, both putting forth strong efforts."

For the Cougars' women's squad, the aforementioned Saviah Williams was the team's first finisher on the 6K course, coming in 24th overall with a time of 28:28.4. Veteran Kenia Irish-Bramble was the second Medgar Evers runner to cross the tape, as she came in 34th place overall (29:20.9), with Aaliyah Bartholomew (62nd overall, 33:11.1) and Nana Samake (68th overall, 33:58) coming in third and fourth for the Cougars, respectively. Rounding out the Medgar Evers female scorers was Jada Lambert, who came in 89th with a time of 37:53.4.

Jahiem Johnson paced the Cougars in the men's 8K meet, as he was the first Medgar Evers runner to finalize the course, coming in 59th overall with a time of 38:00.5. The next three Cougars finishers were all freshman, with Joshua Felix finishing 70th (40:47.2), Cameron Nelson finalizing the course 71st (41:09.5), and Denzel Pineda finishing 77th (42:53.3). Rounding out Medgar Evers' male scorers was Rupert Luard-Charles, who came in 81st place overall with a time of 45:58.2.

The men's and women's cross country teams will return to the course on Sunday, as the squads will travel to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx to compete in the Queensborough Invitational. Start-time for the meet is scheduled for 11:00am.
