Cougars downed in straight sets by Yeshiva University in 2024 season-opener

The Cougars' women's volleyball team opened its 2024 season on Thursday evening, falling to the Maccabees of Yeshiva University in straight sets, by scores of 9-25, 12-25, and 5-25. The non-conference clash took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. While the match served as the season-opener for Medgar Evers, Yeshiva University leveled its record at 1-1 with the victory.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Medgar Evers was led by veteran Britonya Lloyd, as her two kills were a team-best. She also tied for the team-high of six digs, as well. Aaliyah Chapman contributed six digs and a pair of assists, and newcomer Maritza Arguenta registered four digs.

The Maccabees were paced by Talia Finn's match-highs of five kills and 15 service aces. Naomi Harpaz added four kills and four service aces, and Moriah Berkovitch finalized her evening with three kills and four digs. Setter Shany Elmaleh led all players with 13 assists, and Ashley Botnick recorded a match-high 13 digs.

Trailing 7-2 in the opening set, the Cougars rallied to score six of the next seven points to knot things at eight points apiece. That aforementioned run included a pair of attack errors by Finn, consecutive service aces by Jennifer Metra, and later, a service error by Harpaz, and another attack error by Finn. It was all Yeshiva from there, however, as the Maccabees notched 17 of the final 18 points of the set to win it, 25-9. Finn registered a kill and seven service aces during that final spurt.

Yeshiva rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 in the second set to catapult ahead by a score of 20-12 in the latter stages. The Maccabees then registered five straight points to close out set two, using an ace and a kill by Harpaz, as well as three Medgar Evers attack errors to close it out.

In the third and final set, Yeshiva led 4-3 before scoring 21 of the final 23 points to clinch the set, and essentially, the match. Candace Villavicencio registered all seven of her aces on the evening in the third set, assisting the Maccabees in pulling away in that aforementioned set.

Yeshiva earned an attack percentage of .102 on the evening (17-12-49), while the Cougars swatted in the negative (4-14-47, -.213). The Maccabees registered a whopping 29 service aces for the evening, as well.

Medgar Evers will aim to bounce back on Monday evening, welcoming the Patriots of Valley Forge University to the Cougars Cave. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
