Scrappy Cougars push Lightning to limit in CUNYAC defeat to Lehman College

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team lost a competitive clash last night, falling to CUNYAC foe Lehman College by a score of 65-54. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar dipped to a mark of 2-8 on the 2024-2025 campaign (2-2 CUNYAC), while the Lightning improved to 8-7 overall (4-0 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Alexis Davis continued her strong season, registering a team-high 21 points while also snatching six rebounds, swiping five steals, and dishing four assists. Junior standout Sheily Quezada didn't play in the first quarter, but still registered a double-double, scoring 17 points, grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds, and swatting a game-high six shots, and Aaliyah Lyons netted seven points, registered a game-high nine assists, grabbed eight rebounds, and swiped four steals.

Heaven Figueroa paced the Lightning, as she scored a game-high 25 points while tying for the game-high of 14 rebounds. She also tied for the game-high of six steals, while dishing four assists. Emily Kennedy netted 18 points while collecting seven boards, dishing six assists, and tallying two steals, and Mush Muniru posted a double-double, scoring 12 points and snatching 14 rebounds. She also added four steals and tallied three assists.

Lehman College raced out to an early 10-0 advantage in the first quarter, and led the CUNYAC contest 18-10 after 10 minutes of action. In the second quarter, Quezada, who missed the opening quarter, scored six consecutive points to put Medgar Evers ahead by a score of 19-18. The Cougars later led 21-20 before the Lightning put together a 12-2 run over a span of 2:27 to take a 32-23 advantage with 2:53 remaining in the half.

Medgar Evers, down 34-25, sliced its deficit to seven on a Quezada jumper with 16 seconds remaining in the half. The Lightning headed into the locker room with a modest 34-27 edge.

Lehman netted the first six points of the third quarter thanks to a pair of buckets by Emily Kennedy, and one by Figueroa, snatching a 40-27 advantage. Consecutive hoops by Quezada brought the hosts back to within nine (40-31). The Cougars inched as close as six points down (44-38) before the Lightning took a 46-38 advantage into the final quarter.

The Cougars used a converted jumper by Jennifer Metra, a made free throw by Quezada, and a hoop by Davis to pull to within three (46-43) with 8:11 left. Later, the visitors led 51-45 before rattling off six consecutive points to take a 57-45 lead with 3:40 remaining. The Cougars continued to fight, pulling to within seven multiple times (59-52 and 61-54), but Lehman was able to hold on, winning the game by 11 (65-54).
 
The Lightning were the more efficient team shooting the basketball, as Lehman earned a conversion rate of 38.9 percent (28-72), while Medgar Evers hit on 22 out of 69 shot attempts (31.9 percent). Lehman held a 52-43 edge on the glass, and the teams swiped 18 steals apiece. The Cougars held a 17-16 edge in assists, while also swatting eight shots to the Lightning's one. Medgar Evers also won the turnover battle, committing 26 miscues to Lehman's 29.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Friday evening, as the Cougars travel to Baruch's ARC Arena to battle the Bearcats in another CUNYAC clash. Start-time for the pivotal contest is scheduled for 5:30pm.
