Alexis Davis and Aaliyah Lyons combine for 30 points as Cougars lose CUNYAC clash to Bearcats

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC contest on Friday evening, falling to the Bearcats of Baruch College by a score of 85-56. The game took place at the ARC Arena in New York, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 2-9 on the 2024-2025 season (2-3 CUNYAC), while the Bearcats improved to 6-9 (3-2 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Alexis Davis put together another fine performance, recording team-highs of 17 points and eight rebounds. Aaliyah Lyons scored 13 points while collecting six rebounds and dishing a team-high four assists, and Jennifer Metra added nine points, seven boards, three dimes, and two steals. Junior Sheily Quezada's four blocks led all players.

Baruch was paced by standout Mia Castillo, as she scored a whopping 41 points (17-36 FG), leading all players. Additionally, her eight assists were a game-high, and she also collected six rebounds, swiped four steals, and blocked two shots. Elissa Leung added 12 points, a game-high six steals, three dimes, and two rebounds, and D'Andre McRae and Madison Thornton-Lew scored nine and eight points, respectively.

In a very competitive first quarter that saw neither squad take more than a two-point advantage, Leung connected on a trifecta with three seconds left in the period, as Baruch took a 15-14 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

The CUNYAC foes exchanged the lead five times in the opening 2:06 of the second quarter, with the last pendulum swing coming on a converted jumper by Metra to give the Cougars a 20-19 advantage. Medgar Evers then scored nine of the next 11 points of the game to take its biggest lead of the night – an eight-point advantage (29-21) with 4:02 left in the half. That aforementioned spurt was highlighted by five points from Lyons, and another four from Davis.

Baruch College took control of the game from that point forward. The Bearcats went on a ferocious 17-2 run over the ensuing 2:17 to catapult ahead by a score of 38-31. Castillo netted nine of Baruch's 17 points during that run. The Bearcats closed out the half with a fastbreak layup by Castillo, as Baruch took a 43-34 edge into the locker room at halftime.

The Bearcats pulled away significantly in the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 20-7 for the period to take a 63-41 advantage into the fourth. Baruch took a lead as big as 36 points (84-48) before advancing to win the game by 29.

Medgar Evers lost the game despite being the more efficient team shooting the basketball, as the Cougars earned a conversion rate of 41.1 percent (23-56), while the Bearcats connected on 37.6 percent of their shots from the floor (32-85). Baruch held a commanding 53-41 edge on the glass, while also dishing 19 assists to the visitors' 10. The hosts held a 19-9 edge in steals, while also winning the turnover battle, committing just 17 miscues, while Medgar Evers had 31.

The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will play host to Brooklyn College in another CUNYAC clash. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 5:00pm.
