Cougars put forth valiant effort in CUNYAC Battle of Brooklyn, fall to Bulldogs, 63-53

The Cougars' women's basketball team put forth a valiant effort on Wednesday evening, but ultimately fell to the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College in a CUNYAC Battle of Brooklyn by a score of 63-53. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 2-10 on the 2024-2025 campaign, and 2-4 in conference play. Brooklyn improved to 8-9 with the victory, and 4-2 in CUNYAC action.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, standout Sheily Quezada scored a game-high 19 points, while also snatching eight rebounds, leading all players with seven blocks, and swiping three steals. Alexis Davis netted 16 points, collected eight rebounds, and dished three assists, and Aaliyah Lyons scored nine points, snatched a team-high nine rebounds, led all players with six assists, and tied for the game-high of five steals.

In the victory for the Bulldogs, Brooklyn College was paced by Dior Dorsey, as she netted a team-high 15 points while snatching five rebounds, dishing a team-high four assists, and adding three steals. Danae McMullen posted a double-double with 13 points and a team-high 15 rebounds. Her five steals tied for most of any player on the court, and her four swatted shots led the Bulldogs. Ameea Daniel finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and a pair of assists, and Aleah Rafat posted a double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and two assists.

Trailing 4-2 in the opening stages of the game, the Cougars ran off eight consecutive points over a span of 1:12 to snatch a 10-4 advantage, prompting a Bulldogs timeout. That aforementioned run featured four points apiece by Quezada and Jennifer Metra. The Cougars led for the remainder of the quarter, eventually taking a slim 18-17 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

With 4:12 remaining in the half, the Cougars trailed 25-23 before five straight points by Davis put the Cougars ahead 28-25. The Bulldogs would score the final four points of the half to take a 29-28 edge into the locker room at halftime.

Medgar Evers outscored Brooklyn 8-4 in the opening 3:21 of the third quarter to catapult ahead by a score of 36-33. Davis scored four points during that spurt, with Quezada and Metra netting two apiece. After buckets by Daniel and Dorsey gave the Bulldogs the lead back (37-36), Lyons drained a triple to give the Cougars a 39-37 edge, as the pendulum continued to swing back and forth.

Danae McMullen's two straight hoops gave the Bulldogs a 41-39 lead, but two Cougar possessions later, veteran Britonya Lloyd connected on a jumper to knot the game at 41 apiece. Brooklyn College would then finish the quarter on a modest 5-1 run to snatch a 46-42 lead as time expired on period three.

Trailing 48-43 with 7:57 remaining, Quezada converted on a bucket to bring the hosts to within three, 48-45. The Bulldogs would start to pull away from there, however, going on a 10-0 over the ensuing 4:56 to snatch a 58-45 advantage. Aleah Rafat and Audrey Waldvogel contributed four points apiece during that spurt. Medgar Evers would only convert on two shots inside the final three minutes of action, as the Bulldogs went on to win the competitive CUNYAC clash by 10.

The shooting percentages were nearly identical for the CUNYAC foes, with the Bulldogs connecting on 31.5 percent of their shots for the game (28-89), and the Cougars earning a conversion rate of 31.1 percent (19-61). Brooklyn held a slight 59-55 edge on the glass, while also doubling Medgar Evers in steals, 22-11. The Bulldogs registered 19 assists to the Cougars' 16, but Medgar Evers held a 9-5 advantage in blocked shots. Brooklyn won the turnover battle, committing 25 miscues to the Cougars' 41.

Medgar Evers will to bounce back on Friday evening, as the team will head to the Doghouse to battle John Jay College in another CUNYAC game. Start-time for the conference clash is scheduled for 5:00pm.
