Alexis Davis registers game-highs of 29 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks in Cougars' CUNYAC loss to Bloodhounds

Box Score The Cougars' women's basketball team lost a CUNYAC game on Friday evening, falling to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College by a score of 73-51. The game took place at the Doghouse in New York, NY. With the loss, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 2-11 (2-5 CUNYAC) on the 2024-2025 campaign, while John Jay improved to 6-12 (4-3 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Alexis Davis put forth a fantastic effort, posting game-highs of 29 points (6-7 FT), 12 rebounds, and three blocked shots. She also added a pair of assists, as well. Jennifer Metra netted eight points while grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing four assists, and Aaliyah Lyons contributed seven points, six boards, and four times. Standout Sheily Quezada was limited to just 15 minutes played while battling an injury she suffered early in the game.

In the victory for John Jay College, Ashley Zeolla and Michaela Lattimore tied for the team-high of 16 points. Zeolla also grabbed five rebounds, dished two assists, and blocked a pair of shots, and Lattimore snatched seven board on the evening. Briana Minick contributed nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists, and Ayanna Edwards put forth a nice all-around game, netting eight points, dishing a game-high six assists, and snatching six rebounds.

Medgar Evers took a 12-4 advantage in the opening 4:58 of the contest, with five different Cougars scoring a bucket during that spurt (Davis, Metra, Lyons, Shanya Aitcheson, and Ciarah Haggins). The Bloodhounds then put together a 10-4 run to knot the CUNYAC clash at 12 apiece following a Zeolla layup at the 3:21 mark. 

John Jay took its first lead of the contest, 13-12, following a converted freebee by Lattimore. The Bloodhounds then closed out the period with another five points, capped by a Minick three-point conversion as John Jay snatched an 18-12 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

Trailing 24-14 with 7:49 remaining in the half, Medgar Evers rattled off five consecutive points to cut its deficit to five points (24-19) courtesy of a made triple by Bryanna Merger, and a bucket by Lyons.

John Jay then put together a 7-0 run over the ensuing two minutes, increasing their lead to 31-19, as Edwards converted on a jumper to cap the spurt. The Bloodhounds entered the break with a 35-23 advantage.

John Jay built a 20-point lead (47-27), outscoring the Medgar Evers 12-4 over the opening 5:54 of the third quarter, with Lattimore leading that charge with the nine points. Davis ended the Bloodhounds' run with a hoop, before Alexis Jones nailed a triple to give John Jay a 50-29 edge. John Jay finished the third quarter on an 8-0 run, as the Cougars failed to convert a field goal over the final 2:33 of the period. After 30 minutes of action, the Bloodhounds held a commanding 55-29 advantage.

The Bloodhounds' biggest lead of the game was 26 points (63-37), which they took with 5:59 remaining. Medgar Evers did use an 11-2 run to slice the deficit to 17 (65-48) with 2:14 remaining (Davis scored all 11 points during that run), but John Jay finished the game by scoring eight of the final 11 points to account for the 22-point margin of victory.

Neither team shot well from the floor, with John Jay College earning a 34.2 percent conversion rate from the floor (27-79), and the Cougars connecting on just 19 of 66 attempts (28.8 percent). The Bloodhounds dominated the glass, collecting 58 rebounds to the Cougars' 46, and John Jay swiped 11 steals, while the Cougars had seven. The hosts held a 20-12 edge in assists, while also winning the turnover battle, committing just 13 miscues, while Medgar Evers had 21.

The Cougars will look to bounce back on Tuesday evening, as Medgar Evers will welcome the Hawks of Hunter College to the Cougars Cave. Start-time for the CUNYAC clash is scheduled for 5:00pm.
