Baruch's balanced attack too much for Medgar Evers as Cougars drop road CUNYAC contest to Bearcats

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC contest on Friday evening, falling to the Bearcats of Baruch College by a score of 106-67. The game took place at the ARC Arena in New York, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 3-13 on the 2024-2025 season (1-4 CUNYAC), while the Bearcats improved to 8-8 (5-0 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, standout Jonathan Grimsley put together another fine performance, scoring a game-high 26 points (8-10 FT) and a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with three assists. Ryan Panagakos played well against his former team, netting 15 points while swiping three steals and snatching two rebounds, and Trevonne Tcha finished with seven points, four rebounds, and three assists.

Seven players scored in double figures for the Bearcats, including Gerard Nicholson, as he scored a game-high 21 points to go along with five assists and a pair of steals. Trevon Coppin scored 14 points while snatching nine rebounds, and Brandon Goldberg posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The other four players to score in double figures were Peter Douvres (12 points), Nicholas Lam (11 points), Jack Gordon (10 points), and Dylan Minnick (10 points).

Up 5-4 in the opening 2:01 of action, the Bearcats put together a 19-2 run over a span of 5:09 to take a commanding 24-6 advantage. Goldberg led the way with six points during that aforementioned spurt for the hosts. Baruch continued to build its lead, piling the points while allowing just four Cougars field goals in the final 12:50 of the first half. Baruch held a 55-18 advantage at halftime.

Baruch outscored Medgar Evers 10-2 to start the second half, increasing its advantage to 45 (65-20). The Bearcats would go up by as many as 47 before advancing to win the game by 39 points.

The Bearcats were far more efficient shooting the basketball, as Baruch College connected on 52.6 percent of their shot attempts (41-78), while the Cougars converted on 24 of 69 attempts (34.8 percent). Baruch dominated the glass, snatching 57 rebounds compared to 32 for Medgar Evers, and the Bearcats dished 26 assists to the Cougars' nine. Each team tallied seven steals apiece, and the Cougars won the turnover battle, committing just nine miscues while Baruch had 10.

The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will play host to Brooklyn College in another CUNYAC clash. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 7:00pm.
