Medgar Evers nearly completes incredible late comeback before falling to Brooklyn, 73-70 in CUNYAC affair

The Cougars' men's basketball team put forth a hearty effort on Wednesday evening, nearly pulling off a late comeback, but ultimately losing to the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College in a CUNYAC Battle of Brooklyn by a score of 73-70. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 3-14 on the 2024-2025 campaign, and 1-5 in conference play. Brooklyn improved to 8-9 with the victory, and 3-3 in CUNYAC action.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, standout Ahmed Toure scored a team-high 16 points (7-8 FG, 2-2 FT) to go along with eight rebounds, three assists, a pair of blocks, and two steals. Senior Ryan Panagakos scored 14 points while snatching three rebounds and contributing three assists, and Jonathan Grimsley and Michael Perez registered 12 points apiece. Grimsley also added four rebounds and four dimes, as well. Finally, Andre Evans Jr. finalized his evening with 10 points, six boards, and four assists.

Joe Charles connected on four triples, and seven of his 11 attempts from the floor, to finish with a game-high 18 points for Brooklyn College. Serge Thrasybule added 11 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, and David McFadden nearly registered a double-double, netting 10 points and collecting a game-high nine rebounds while dishing five assists. Brendan Armour finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three steals, and a pair of assists, and Stephon McGill finalized his evening with nine points, a game-high six assists, five rebounds, and two steals.

Brooklyn College led 18-13 before rattling off seven consecutive points (courtesy of five points by Thrasybule and a bucket by Armour) to take its largest lead of the first half, 25-13, with 6:59 to go in the session. Medgar Evers stormed back, though, going on a 9-0 run over a span of 4:31 to inch to within three (25-22) with 2:28 left in the half. Daniel McCollum scored four points during the run, while Toure added three. The Bulldogs would then outscore the hosts 8-4 for the remainder of the half to take a 33-26 edge into the locker room at halftime.

The Cougars trailed 56-42 with 9:42 remaining, and 71-59 with 2:55 to go, before staging a ferocious comeback attempt. Medgar Evers scored 11 consecutive points over a span of 2:09 to pull to within a point. Michael Perez and Panagakos nailed triples during that aforementioned run, while Toure completed a three-point play, and Grimsley added a hoop.

With the Bulldogs leading by a point and 10 seconds remaining, Malik Dale converted on a pair of free throw attempts to give the Bulldogs a three-point advantage. On the Cougars' final possession, Grimsley's off-balance triple attempt sailed wide of the rim, giving Brooklyn College a nail-biting CUNYAC triumph.

The CUNYAC foes earned the same shooting percentage for the evening, both connecting on 28 of 61 attempts from the floor (45.9 percent). Brooklyn held a 38-33 advantage on the glass, while also dishing 23 assists to the Cougars' 20. The Bulldogs held an 11-6 edge in steals, but the Cougars won the turnover battle, committing 16 miscues to Brooklyn's 17.

Medgar Evers will to bounce back on Friday evening, as the team will head to the Doghouse to battle John Jay College in another CUNYAC game. Start-time for the conference clash is scheduled for 7:00pm.
