Jonathan Grimsley pours in game-high 30 points as Cougars suffer loss to Bloodhounds in CUNYAC clash

The Cougars' men's basketball team lost a CUNYAC game on Friday evening, falling to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College by a score of 89-72. The game took place at the Doghouse in New York, NY. With the loss, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 3-15 (1-6 CUNYAC) on the 2024-2025 campaign, while John Jay improved to 13-5 (6-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Jonathan Grimsley put forth a terrific performance, scoring a game-high 30 points while snatching a team-best 13 rebounds. Ryan Panagakos contributed 10 points and eight rebounds, and Andre Evans Jr. reached 900 points for his Medgar Evers career, netting 10 points on the evening while collecting five rebounds and posting team-highs of four assists and three blocks. Finally, it was Ahmed Toure scoring seven points, snatching four rebounds, and adding a game-high three steals.

In the victory for John Jay College, Jamir Stewart netted a team-high 19 points (6-6 FT) while grabbing six rebounds, dishing two assists, and adding a pair of steals. Jeremiah Cardi scored 14 points, grabbed six rebounds, and recorded three assists, and Keyshawn Miller finalized his evening with 12 points, six rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals. Syl Granda posted a double-double with 10 points and game-highs of 15 rebounds and six assists, and Emmanuel Adenekan netted nine points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and swatted a game-high eight shots.

Evelyn led the way with six points as the John Jay College raced out to a 13-5 advantage in the opening 3:03 of action. After Grimsley pulled the Cougars to within three (15-12) with a jumper, TJ Chisholm connected for his first triple of the evening with 14:17 to play in the first half to extend the Bloodhound advantage to six, 18-12.

Later, Adrian Kopec and Miller connected on a pair of triples as the Bloodhounds put together an 8-2 run to take a 32-20 edge with 6:04 remaining in the opening session. John Jay led by as many as 13 points on two different occasions down the stretch before taking a 45-35 edge into the locker room at halftime.

Trailing 47-35 in the opening minute of the second half, the Cougars put together a 6-0 run, courtesy of a bucket apiece by Grimsley, Panagakos, and Michael Perez. Medgar Evers later trailed 50-44, before the hosts rattled off six straight points to snatch a 56-44 advantage with 15:38 left.

The home school stayed in command following that aforementioned run, never leading by any less than nine points the rest of the way, and eventually winning the CUNYAC clash by 17 points. After benefiting from seven triples in the opening 20 minutes, John Jay connected on 11 shots in the paint in the second half.

John Jay was the more efficient team shooting the basketball, as John Jay earned a conversion rate of 38.6 percent (27-70), while Medgar Evers drained just 28 of 92 shots (30.4 percent). The Bloodhounds held a 64-55 edge on the glass, while also dishing 19 assists compared to 11 for the visitors. Medgar Evers held a 14-11 advantage in steals, and the Cougars also won the turnover battle, committing just 12 miscues, while John Jay had 20.

The Cougars will look to bounce back on Tuesday evening, as Medgar Evers will welcome the Hawks of Hunter College to the Cougars Cave. Start-time for the CUNYAC clash is scheduled for 7:00pm.
