The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team picked up a thrilling victory on Tuesday evening, defeating CUNYAC Hunter College at the Cougars Cave by a score of 73-68 in overtime. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, the Cougars improved to 4-15 on the 2024-2025 campaign (2-6 CUNYAC). Hunter dipped to a mark of 4-10 (2-6 CUNYAC).

In the win for the Cougars, Michael Perez scored a team-high 24 points, connecting on four shots from long range, and all six of his free throw attempts. He also tied for the game-high of four steals, as well. Jonathan Grimsley posted a double-double, netting 16 points, snatching 13 rebounds, tying for the game-high of four steals, and adding three assists, and Ahmed Toure scored 10 points, tied for the game-high of 14 rebounds, swiped three steals, and dished three assists.

Despite the loss for Hunter College, Sal Saputo posted a double-double for the Hawks, scoring a game-high 25 points while collecting 10 rebounds and swiping two steals. Jack Meyers netted 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished two assists, and Casey Meyers finalized his evening with 11 points, five boards, four assists, and two steals. Finally, Jayden Jarret's 14 rebounds tied him with Medgar Evers' Toure for the game-high.

Trailing 16-5 in the opening 8:09, the Cougars put together an 18-6 run over a span of 7:51 to snatch a 23-22 advantage. Perez led the way for Medgar Evers during that run with seven points, with Toure contributing five. The final four minutes of the half featured balanced play, with Hunter slightly outscoring Medgar Evers 9-6 to take a slim 31-29 edge as time expired on the first half.

In the second half, Medgar Evers spent the opening 13:20 of the session outscoring Hunter College 26-11 to take a 55-42 advantage. Perez scored 13 points during that ferocious Cougars spurt, with Grimsley adding six. The Cougars appeared to be in control, threatening to run away with the victory, but the Hawks refused to go quietly.

The pendulum swung the visitors' way, as Hunter put together an 11-0 run over a span of 2:21 to slice the Cougars' lead to two (55-53). Saputo paced the Hawks with eight points during that stretch. Shortly later, Medgar Evers led 58-55 before five straight points by Hunter, capped by a Saputo triple, put the Hawks ahead 60-58 with 2:31 left.

The Hawks later led 62-60 with 48 seconds left before Toure connected on a jumper in the paint to knot the game at 62 apiece. That would be the final bucket of regulation, as Grimsley's potential game-winning attempt at the buzzer from eight feet away was off the mark, sending the CUNYAC contest to overtime.

With Perez exiting the game late in the second half due to injury, Grimsley took over in overtime, scoring four points and snatching three rebounds, as Medgar Evers held Hunter to just one field goal in the extra session, outscoring Hunter College 11-6 to win the game by a score of 73-68.

Hunter College lost the game despite being the more efficient squad shooting the basketball, as the Hawks connected on 39.3 percent of their shots from the floor for the evening (24-61) compared to a 30.4 percent conversion rate for the Cougars (24-79). Hunter held a 55-49 edge in the rebounding category, but the Cougars swiped 17 steals compared to just six for the Hawks. Each team dished 16 assists, and Medgar Evers won the turnover battle, committing just 11 miscues, while Hunter had 24.

The Cougars will get back to work on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, NY to battle the Cardinals in another pivotal CUNYAC contest. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
