Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Evans Jr. scores game-high 19 points, paces Cougars to exciting 63-58 CUNYAC triumph over Cardinals

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team picked up a crucial victory on Friday evening, winning its second consecutive game by defeating the Cardinals of York College in a CUNYAC game by a score of 63-58. The game took place at the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, NY. With the triumph, the Cougars improved to a record of 5-15 on the 2024-2025 campaign (3-6 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals dipped to 2-16 (0-9 CUNYAC).

In the victory for the Cougars, Andre Evans Jr. recorded game-highs of 19 points and three steals. He also snatched six rebounds, as well. Michael Perez contributed nine points on the evening, while Ahmed Toure put together a nice all-around effort, scoring seven points, collecting a game-high 17 rebounds, dishing three assists, and swiping two steals.

Pacing York College despite its defeat was Michael Litchfield, as he connected on three shots from downtown, finishing with a team-high 17 points. Aidony Nivar recorded 12 points, snatched five rebounds, and dished two assists, and finally, it was Malakai Clark finalizing his evening with eight points, four boards, and a pair of assists.

With the game knotted at five apiece in the early stages, Medgar Evers put together a ferocious 12-0 run over a span of 3:56 to take a commanding 17-5 advantage with 11:30 remaining in the half. Evans Jr. accounted for eight of the Cougars' 12 points during that aforementioned spurt. Medgar Evers then outscored the hosts 13-6 over the ensuing 8:19 to stretch the advantage to 19 (30-11) with 2:54 to go until halftime.

The Cardinals started to battle back momentarily, scoring six straight points courtesy of buckets by Benjamin Litchfield, Grant, and Nivar, as York sliced Medgar's lead to 13 (30-17), but Medgar scored four of the next six points to take a 34-19 edge into the locker room at halftime.

York cut Medgar Evers' lead to single digits (45-36) with 11:20 remaining in the game following a three-point conversion by Kai Holland. The Cardinals continued to inch closer, getting within five (47-42) on an Elie Mondelus trey with 9:14 left.

Later, with the Cougars clinging to a 53-49 edge with 4:18 left, Medgar Evers rattled off five consecutive points to stretch its lead back to nine points. Evans Jr. accounted for all five points during that run. The Cougars held a seemingly-comfortable 61-52 edge with 19 seconds left, but a pair of Nivar triples sliced Medgar Evers' lead to three (61-58) with four seconds left.

On the ensuing inbound play, guard Nicholas Bocharov caught the ball and drew a foul. He would proceed to head to the free throw line and nail both freebees, icing the game and giving the Cougars a thrilling CUNYAC win.

York College lost the game despite recording a higher shooting percentage, as the Cardinals connected on 37.7 percent of their attempts from the floor (20-53), while the Cougars earned a conversion rate of 34.5 percent (20-58). Medgar Evers dominated the glass, snatching 40 rebounds to York's 29, and the Cougars also held a 10-9 edge in steals. The Cardinals dished 16 assists to Medgar Evers' 14, and York narrowly won the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues to the Cougars' 20.

Medgar Evers will return to the hardwood on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to Lehman College's APEX Center to battle the Lightning in another CUNYAC clash. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
