Cougars hang tough in opening 20 minutes before Hawks pull away in second half of CUNYAC clash

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team suffered a defeat on Tuesday evening, falling to Hunter College at the Cougars Cave by a score of 79-44. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to 2-12 on the 2024-2025 campaign (2-6 CUNYAC). Hunter improved to a record of 13-4 (8-0 CUNYAC).  

Despite the loss for the Cougars, point guard Aaliyah Lyons scored a team-high 15 points while dishing a game-high seven assists and swiping a team-best four steals. Alexis Davis added 11 points and five rebounds, and Jennifer Metra finalized her evening with eight points and eight boards.

In the victory for Hunter College, star guard Alexa Charles led all players with 25 points, 16 rebounds, and six steals. Her six assists tied for the team-high in that category, as well. Erin Cosio added 19 points, six assists, and four boards, and Gianna Henriques finalized her evening with 13 points, five rebounds, and a pair of steals. Finally, it was Katie Burke contributing 11 points and six rebounds.

The Hawks dominated the opening 8:47, taking a commanding 29-4 advantage, as it looked as though Hunter would dominate the contest all the way through. Medgar Evers, however, put together a 16-3 run that spanned two quarters and a total of 8:23, as the Cougars inched to within 12 (32-20) with 3:24 left in the half. In what was a very balanced run for Medgar Evers, six different players scored, with Quezada leading the way with four points.

The Final 3:23 of the opening half featured back-and-forth action, the with Hawks outscoring the Cougars 5-3 during that span and taking a 37-23 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Medgar Evers did its best to keep the game close, trailing by 16 (52-36) with 2:04 remaining in the third quarter. Hunter dominated the action from there, however, finishing the period on a 6-0 run (courtesy of buckets by Dorthea Yoakum, Charles, and Katie Burke), and outscoring the hosts 21-8 in the fourth to account for the 35-point margin of victory.

Hunter College converted on 44.3 percent of its attempts from the floor for the evening (31-70) while the Cougars earned a conversion rate of just 26.6 percent (17-64). The Hawks held a healthy 50-41 edge on the glass, while also dishing 24 assists to Medgar Evers' 14. Hunter swiped 15 steals to the Cougars' six, and the Hawks won the turnover battle, committing 16 miscues, while Medgar Evers had 23.

The Cougars will get back to work on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, NY to battle the Cardinals in another pivotal CUNYAC contest. Start-time is scheduled for 5:00pm.
