Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars' CUNYAC playoff hopes dented with 45-44 loss to Cardinals; Lyons scores game-high 23 despite defeat

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team suffered a tough defeat on Friday evening, falling to CUNYAC foe York College by a score of 45-44. The game took place at the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to a record of 2-13 on the 2024-2025 campaign (2-7 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals picked up their first victory of the season, moving to 1-14 (1-8 CUNYAC).

Playing shorthanded without their two top scorers, Alexis Davis and Sheily Quezada, Medgar Evers leaned mostly on Aaliyah Lyons throughout the evening. The veteran point guard scored a game-high 23 points while snatching 12 rebounds and dishing a game-high five assists. She also tied for the team-high of four steals. Nana Samake nearly posted a double-double, scoring 11 points and collecting nine rebounds, and Jennifer Metra finalized her evening with 10 points, a game-high 16 boards, four steals, and two dimes.

Pacing York College in its victory was Amaniya Aiken, as she registered team-bests of 17 points and 15 rebounds. She also dished three assists and swiped a pair of steals. Alicia Gumbs finished with 15 points, three rebounds, two dimes, a pair of swatted shots, and two steals, and Madison Plaza contributed seven points, five boards, and four assists.

The CUNYAC foes combined for just 13 points in the opening quarter, with York College owning a 7-6 advantage at the conclusion of the period. Lyons netted all six of the Cougars' points in the quarter, while Aiken accounted for four of York's seven.

The Cardinals' biggest lead of the game was four points, which it took twice in the second quarter (13-9 and 15-11), but a 10-4 Medgar Evers run over a span of 6:12 gave the visitors a slim 21-19 advantage, with a converted jumper by Metra capping the run. Lyons netted four points during that aforementioned spurt, with Samake and Metra accounting for three points apiece. York netted the final four points of the quarter to grab a 23-21 advantage as time expired on the first half.

It appeared as though Medgar Evers might begin to slightly pull away late in the third quarter, as the visitors took a six-point edge (37-31) with just over a minute remaining in the period. The Cardinals kept the CUNYAC contest close, scoring three points in the final 41 seconds of the third, courtesy of a converted free throw by Beautifull Earth, and a made layup by Gumbs. After 30 minutes of action, Medgar Evers led 37-34.

The Cougars held a five-point advantage (41-36) with 6:21 to play, but a 7-0 Cardinals run (courtesy of a drained triple by Aiken, two converted free throws by Adams, and a made bucket by Gumbs) put York ahead 43-41 with 3:10 left. On Medgar Evers' ensuing possession, Metra banked-in a jumper in the paint to knot the game at 43-all with 2:52 remaining.

Later, with 1:09 left, Metra split a pair of free throws to give Medgar Evers a 44-43 edge. The score remained that way until there were 20 seconds remaining when Gumbs would convert on a layup to give the hosts a 45-44 edge. Two Cougar possessions and two missed free throws by Madison Plaza later, Medgar Evers had a chance to win the game on a final possession, but Lyons' desperation three-point attempt was off the mark, giving York the thrilling one-point win.

Neither team shot well from the floor, with York College converting on just 26.1 percent of its shot attempts (18-69), and the Cougars earning a shooting percentage of 22.1 percent for the evening (17-77). Medgar Evers dominated the glass, collecting 60 rebounds compared to 47 for the Cardinals, and the Cougars won the turnover battle, committing 22 miscues to York's 26. York held an 11-8 edge in assists, and the teams swiped 12 steals apiece.

Medgar Evers will return to the hardwood on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to Lehman College's APEX Center to battle the Lightning in another CUNYAC clash. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 5:00pm.
