Cougars drop CUNYAC clash to Lightning at APEX Center despite Jennifer Metra's career-high 24 points

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team suffered a CUNYAC defeat on Tuesday evening, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College by a score of 72-55. The game took place at the APEX Center in the Bronx. With the defeat, Medgar dipped to a mark of 2-14 on the 2024-2025 campaign (2-8 CUNYAC), while the Lightning improved to 10-11 (6-4 CUNYAC).

Pacing the Cougars with a career-best and team-high 24 points was veteran guard Jennifer Metra. Her 15 rebounds led all players, and her five steals were a team-best. Aaliyah Lyons scored 20 points, collected eight rebounds, and dished two assists, and Ciarah Haggins contributed five points, six boards, and two swatted shots.

Heaven Figueroa put forth a tremendous effort, scoring a game-high 34 points (13-30 FG, 5-6 FT) to go along with a team-high 13 rebounds. Her eight steals led all players, and she tied for the game-high of five assists. Emily Kennedy registered 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals, and Musharafa Muniru posted a double-double with 10 points, 12 boards, five steals, and three assists.

Lehman College raced out to an early 18-3 advantage just 5:27 into the game. The Cougars finished the period strong, outscoring the hosts 6-2 to complete the quarter. Metra and Lyons accounted for three points apiece during that spurt, as Medgar Evers inched to within 11 (20-9) after 10 minutes of action.

The Lightning outscored the Cougars 9-2 in the opening 5:33 of the second quarter, opening up a commanding 29-11 advantage. Kennedy scored six points during that run, with Figueroa adding three. Lehman's 21-point advantage at the half (37-16) was its biggest edge of the game up till that juncture.

The third quarter was the highest-scoring period of the night, with the CUNYAC foes combining for 45 points. Lehman College continued to add to its commanding lead in the third, going up by as many as 35 points on two occasions before taking a 65-33 edge into the final period.

Medgar Evers turned up the voltage in the fourth quarter, outscoring Lehman College 22-7. Metra scored 10 points in the quarter, with Lyons contributing seven, but the strong period by the visitors wasn't enough, as the Lightning still went on to capture the CUNYAC victory convincingly, by 17 (72-55).

Neither team shot well from the floor, with the Lightning earning a conversion rate of 35.8 percent (29-81), and Medgar Evers connecting on 19 of 61 attempts (31.1 percent). Lehman College held a 56-47 edge on the glass, while also swiping 18 steals compared to the Cougars' 12. The Lightning finished with 20 assists on the night, while the visitors had five, and Lehman won the turnover battle, committing 21 miscues to Medgar Evers' 27.

The Cougars will return to action on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to CCNY's Nat Holman Gymnasium for a pivotal game against the Beavers. Start-time for the CUNYAC clash is scheduled for 5:00pm.
