Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars boost CUNYAC playoff hopes, defeat Beavers, 68-49; Four Medgar players reach double figures in win

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team won a pivotal CUNYAC game on Friday evening, defeating the Beavers of CCNY by a score of 68-49. The conference clash took place at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in New York, NY. With the victory, the Cougars improved to a mark of 3-14 on the 2024-2025 season (3-8 CUNYAC), while the Beavers fell to 1-15 on the year (1-10 CUNYAC).

Alexis Davis and Sheily Quezada made their returns for the Cougars, but it was Jennifer Metra's offensive prowess that was the talk of the evening. For the second consecutive game, Metra reached the 20-point mark, netting a game-high 23 points (6-8 FT) to go along with eight rebounds, a game-high five steals, and two assists. Aaliyah Lyons continued her scoring barrage, netting 20-points or more for the third straight game. Lyons finished with 20 points, a team-high 12 rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Davis (4-6 FG) scored 11 points in her return, and Quezada added 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a game-high two swatted shots.

Despite the loss for CCNY, Anais Rosa connected on four triples, finishing with a team-high 20 points to go along with two boards and a pair of steals. Kasia Morrison registered 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists, and Yazmin Loma Romero finalized her evening with six points and three caroms. Jocelyn Ramos' five assists were led all players, and Ashley Subervi's 13 rebounds led all players.

Morrison's three-point conversion gave the Beavers their biggest lead of the evening, a seven-point edge (14-7), with 2:07 remaining in the first quarter. The Cougars then used a 12-0 run that spanned 4:25 of game action, to take a 19-14 advantage with 7:42 left in the half. Quezada accounted for four points during that aforementioned run, with Metra adding three.

After Morrison's layup temporarily halted the Cougars' momentum, Medgar Evers responded by rattling off 15 of the next 18 points to take a commanding 34-19 advantage into the locker room at halftime. During that 15-3 run, Lyons scored nine points, with Davis netting six.

CCNY started the third quarter by going on a 16-7 run to close to within six (41-35) with 4:55 to go in the period. The Beavers were able to close the gap thanks to Rosa's heroics, as she connected on three trifectas, a bucket, and a free throw. In a game of runs, the Cougars responded with another, finishing the quarter on a 12-3 spurt to take a 53-38 edge after 30 minutes of action. Lyons led that run with five points.

In the fourth quarter, the Cougars never led by any less than 13 points, eventually going up by 23 before winning the game comfortably by 19.

Medgar Evers converted on 34.3 percent of its attempts from the floor (24-70), but the Cougars were lights-out from the free throw line, connecting on 78.3 percent of their opportunities there (18-23). CCNY struggled from the floor (19-70, 27.1 percent) and the line (5-12, 41.7 percent), as the Beavers were unable to get anything going. Medgar Evers held a 57-51 edge on the glass, while also swiping 13 steals to the Beavers' 10. CCNY held a 13-10 advantage in assists, but Medgar won the turnover battle, committing just 15 miscues, while the hosts had 23.

The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday evening, as Medgar Evers will host Baruch College in a CUNYAC game. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 5:00pm.
