Lehman's offensive firepower overwhelms Medgar Evers as Cougars drop CUNYAC match

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team dropped a CUNYAC match on Thursday afternoon, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College by a score of 9-0. The match served as a home contest for the Cougars, despite the clash unfolding from Lehman College's South Field in the Bronx. With the loss, Medgar Evers dipped to 1-9-1 (0-3 CUNYAC), while the Lightning improved to 5-1-3 (1-1-1 CUNYAC).

After 16 scoreless minutes, Lehman broke through for the contest's first goal in the 17th courtesy of a tally by Ashraf Abubakar (from Adam Kowalski and Brandon Dennis). Just under four minutes later (21:44), Dennis added an unassisted score to boost the Lightning's advantage to 2-0.

A header goal by Lehman's Ibrahim Kone (from Christian Posada at 40:35) gave the Lightning a commanding 3-0 advantage, and 69 seconds later, Brandon scored again, slicing home a beautiful pass from Kowalski. After 45 minutes of action, Lehman held a 4-0 lead.

The Lightning continued to pepper shots into the net in the second half of action. Koky Duarte scored two goals 7:29 apart (at 51:15, from Dennis, and at 68:28, from Joseph A. Opesanwo and Matthew Strainz) to give the Lightning a 6-0 advantage. Capping the scoring for the afternoon were Lance Brdaric (74:46, from Gabriel Arful and Russell Lucero), Dalton Charlton (75:40, from Opesanwo), and Opesanwo (87:28, from Alhassan).

Most of the contest was played in Lehman College's offensive zone, with the Lightning hold an incredible 48-4 edge in shots.

Andres Barajas picked up the win in goal for the Lightning, as he logged the first 45 minutes and allowed no goals and made a save. Strainz played the final 45 minutes between the pipes and didn't face a shot. Clirian Nunez took the loss for Medgar Evers, allowing all nine goals while making 12 saves.

The Cougars will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon, as they'll take to the road to battle the Brooklyn Bulldogs. Start-time is scheduled for 12:00pm.
