Women's volleyball suffers non-conference loss to SUNY Old Westbury at Clark Athletic Center

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team was defeated in straight sets in non-conference action on Thursday evening, falling to the Panthers of SUNY Old Westbury by scores of 11-25, 7-25, and 14-25. The match took place at the Clark Athletic Center in Old Westbury, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars are now 0-12 on the 2025 campaign, while the hosts improved to 4-7.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Jennifer Metra and Sariyah Brumaire tied for the team-high of three kills. Metra also contributed seven digs and a team-high two service aces, while Brumaire registered a pair of digs. Brittany Palacio's three assists led all Medgar Evers players, and Maritza Argueta finalized her evening with two assists and a pair of digs.

Leading the way for SUNY Old Westbury was Stephanie Maser, as she finished with a match-high 10 kills (10-2-16, .500) to go along with three digs and two service aces. Paige Herbert registered seven kills (7-2-10, .500), five digs, and three service aces, and Kasey Coppola added five kills, two digs, and two service aces. Stephanie Samulde led all players with 16 assists on the evening, with Katia Gomez not far behind, as she had 14 helpers.

In the first set of the evening, Old Westbury was hitting on all cylinders, recording 16 kills, registering three service aces, and committing just four errors. The Panthers used a pair of 6-0 runs in the opening set to not only control the pace, but also keep distance between themselves and the Cougars. Medgar Evers trailed 24-8 before rattling off three straight points, courtesy of a kill by Palacios and a pair of Coppola attack errors. Coppola redeemed herself pretty quickly, though, slamming home a kill to clinch the set for the hosts.

Leading 7-2 in the second set, the Panthers scored seven straight, highlighted by four service aces by Shaniya McAllister, to snatch a commanding 14-2 edge. The Cougars showed some fight, scoring five straight (courtesy of three Panther errors, and two service aces by Metra) to pull to within seven, 14-7. SUNY Old Westbury would dominate the remainder of the set, though, scoring the final 11 points to win it convincingly, 25-7.

The Cougars used an early 4-0 spurt to snatch a 4-2 advantage in the third set. A Metra kill, and a pair of attack errors and a service error by the hosts gave the visitors that aforementioned edge. The Panthers battled back to take a 6-5 lead, but a pair of SUNY Old Westbury attack errors, sandwiched around a Sarah Vallon service ace, gave Medgar Evers the lead once again, 8-6.

SUNY Old Westbury would respond to the Cougars' latest run in a big way, scoring 15 of the set's next 18 points to take a 21-11 advantage. Medgar Evers wasn't able to inch any closer than nine points down for the remainder of the set, with the Panthers winning it 25-14, essentially capturing the match in the process.

For the match, SUNY Old Westbury hit .371 (33-10-62), while the Cougars hit in the negative. The Panthers held a 23-3 edge in service aces, and a 25-14 advantage in assists.

Medgar Evers will look to get back on track on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will host Lehman College in a CUNYAC match. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
