The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team put forth a valiant effort on Tuesday evening, but the Cougars ultimately dropped a CUNYAC match to Lehman College by scores of 10-25, 20-25, 25-23, and 5-25. The match took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 0-13 on the 2025 campaign (0-4 CUNYAC), while the Lightning improved to 3-11 (1-3 CUNYAC).

Sariyah Brumaire and Jennifer Metra recorded three kills apiece, with Brumaire also adding a match-high 11 digs, and team-highs of five assists and four service aces, and Metra finishing with nine digs. Finally, it was Maritza Argueta finishing with nine digs.

Top Performers for the Lightning

Alanis Vasquez put forth a strong performance for Lehman College, as she recorded a match-high eight kills (8-1-13, .538) to go along with 11 assists, a match-high five service aces, and five digs. Abena Abankwa, Cheyenne Gray-Taitt, Grayana Altidor, and Laura Pinales each recorded five kills, with Altidor piling a team-best 10 digs. Finally, it was Edith Oblitas finishing with a match-high 14 assists.

How the Match Unfolded

Leading 13-8 in the opening set, Lehman College rattled off 12 of the next 13 points to capture it, 25-9. A pair of kills by Kimarea Brown, as well as three service aces by Vasquez, highlighted that aforementioned spurt for the visitors.

The second set was significantly more competitive between the two CUNYAC foes. Medgar Evers raced out to an early 6-1 advantage thanks to a Chapman kill and five errors by Lehman College. The Lightning answered with four straight points, courtesy of a kill and service ace by Gray-Taitt, sandwiched around a pair of Cougars errors.

Later, with Medgar Evers holding a slim 13-12 edge, the Lightning would take the lead for good thanks to an attack error by Shanya Aitcheson, a bad set by Chapman, and a service ace by Vismairely Fernandez. That gave Lehman a 15-13 advantage. The Lightning would then outscore the Cougars 10-7 for the remainder of the set to win it, 25-20.

Trailing 4-1 in the third set, Medgar Evers scored six straight points to snatch a 7-4 advantage. That 6-0 spurt featured a kill by Chapman and three service aces by Brumaire. Later, leading 12-10, the Cougars put together another run, this time a 4-0 spurt, courtesy of four Lehman errors, as Medgar took a seemingly comfortable 16-10 advantage.

The pendulum then swung towards the Lightning, as Lehman used a kill apiece by Gray-Taitt, Altidor, and Abankwa, as well as a service ace by Gray-Taitt, to pull to within two, 16-14. Medgar then scored six of the next seven to take a seven-point edge, 22-15. Metra earned a kill during that sequence, with Chapman and Brumaire adding an ace each.

Lehman College refused to quit, going on an 8-2 run to inch to within one, 24-23, prompting a timeout from head coach Michell Cadet. The timeout worked, as Chloe Colon the served the ball into the net, giving Medgar Evers a 25-23 third set triumph.

The Lightning dominated the fourth set, using eight service aces and eight kills to put away the Cougars, 25-5. Medgar Evers recorded just one kill and no service aces during the fourth.

Next Up for Medgar Evers

The Cougars will now have six days off before returning to action on Tuesday evening, as they'll travel to the Hunter Sportsplex (New York, NY) to battle the Hunter College Hawks in another CUNYAC battle. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
