Women's volleyball defeated by CUNYAC foe Hunter College in straight sets Tuesday evening

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team suffered a CUNYAC defeat on Tuesday evening, falling to the Hawks of Hunter College by scores of 3-25, 12-25, and 6-25. The match took place at the Hunter Sportsplex in New York, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-14 on the 2025 season (0-5 CUNYAC). Meanwhile, the Hawks improved to 7-19 (3-2 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, veteran Martiza Argueta tallied the team's lone kill, while also leading her squad in digs with four. Sariyah Brumaire finalized her evening with three digs and a service ace for Medgar Evers.

Lily Mattison led the way for Hunter College, registering a match-high 12 kills on 17 attempts (.529). She also added six service aces, a pair of digs, and a solo block, finalizing her evening with a match-high 19.5 points. Madeline Snyder's 23 assists and 10 service aces were both match-highs, and she also contributed four digs as well. Varvara Kudinova added four kills on five attempts (4-1-5, .600), and Amina Moummad finished with three kills on .429 hitting along with four aces.

Hunter College was never challenged in the opening set, racing out to a 10-0 advantage, and eventually ballooning its lead to 22-1, before capturing it, 25-3. The hosts recorded 10 service aces (four by Synder, and four by Moummad) and 10 kills (three by Moummad) in set one.

The Cougars grabbed an early 4-1 edge in the second set, courtesy of three Hunter attack errors, and a service ace by Brumaire. The Hawks responded with a 6-0 run, highlighted by a kill apiece by Mattison and Montalbano, to take a 7-4 lead. Later, with the Hawks owning a 13-7 advantage, Hunter used a quick 4-0 spurt to take a 17-7 edge. The hosts never led by fewer than nine points the remainder of the set, winning it, 25-12.

Hunter dominated the third and final set, scoring the opening 12 points and scoring the final six to capture it, 25-6, and in essence, sweep the match. The Hawks hit .667 (9-1-12) in the third, while also recording nine of their 25 service aces for the night in that set, as well.

Medgar Evers earned just one kill across the three sets, while the Hawks hit .400 (27-5-50) and tallied 25 service aces as a team, their highest total of the season.

The Cougars will return to action on Thursday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center (Hackettstown, NJ) to battle the Cyclones of Centenary University. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
