Belco Guendeba honored on Senior Day, scores goal in final career home match as Cougars defeated by Hawks

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team dropped its final home match of the 2025 campaign this past Saturday, falling to the Hawks of Hunter College by a score of 5-1. The match was played at Randall's Island (Field No. 74) in New York, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 1-12-1 on the season (0-6 CUNYAC), while Hunter improved to 5-5-4 (2-1-3 CUNYAC).

Prior to the match, four-year senior standout Belco Guendeba was honored by the institution's Department of Athletics and men's soccer program. Head Coach Jack W. Thelusma expressed some heartfelt sentiments about the senior, who was then presented with a commemorative picture frame in a show of appreciation for his tenure at the school. He was then mobbed by his teammates in a special scene.

When the game started, it was all Hawks, who did most of their offensive damage in the opening 29 minutes of action. Saleel Edlin scored an unassisted goal just 3:16 in, and later, at 10:31 and 11:31, respectively, Georgios Tsiakas and Abdullah Maghrabi would score goals to boost Hunter's advantage to 3-0. Fernando Zuvela earned an assist on Tsiakas' tally, and Leonardo Kaplan and Eldin earned helpers on Maghrabi's goal. The Hawks capped the scoring for the half at 28:06 when Kaplan slipped a pass over to Ahmed Abukar, who sliced the ball home. At the half, Hunter led 4-0.

Just 7:23 into the second half (52:23), Brandon Fridburg scored an unassisted goal to increase the visitors' advantage to 5-0. Medgar Evers did get on the board at 84:33 when Guendeba scored on a penalty kick to make it 5-1. That would be the final goal scored on the afternoon by either side.

For the CUNYAC clash, Hunter College held a 17-2 edge in shots, and a 5-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Max Tsignalnitsky earned a shutout for the Hawks, as he allowed just the penalty kick goal while facing no other shots. Guendeba started in net for the Cougars, allowing five goals and making four saves.

Medgar Evers will wrap up its 2025 campaign on Wednesday afternoon, as the Cougars will had back to Randall's Island (Field No. 74) to battle the Bloodhounds of John Jay College. Start-time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
