Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars edged by Cardinals 1-0 in low-scoring CUNYAC confrontation at Randall's Island on Saturday

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team lost its home opener on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Cardinals of York College in a CUNYAC match by a score of 1-0. The clash took place on the No. 74 field at Randall's Island in New York, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 1-7-1 on the 2025 campaign (0-2 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals improved to a record of 2-3-3 (1-0-1 CUNYAC).

In a match that featured very little in the way of offense, York College had a few golden opportunities in the first half, peppering a few shots within striking distance that were saved by Medgar Evers netminder Clirian Nunez in the first 21 minutes of action. The Cougars registered three shots on-goal over the course of the ensuing five minutes, all of which were stopped by York goalkeeper Alexander Cruz.

The teams combined for 15 first half shots (York with eight, Medgar Evers with seven), including four apiece on-net, but neither conference foe could break through with a goal as time expired on the opening session.

Derick Aboagye-Frimpong scored what turned out to be the lone and match-winning tally at 56:31. Earnest Bawilliam sent a beautiful cross pass over to Aboagye Frimpong, who in turn blasted the ball into the top left-hand corner of the net. The Cardinals' stellar defense would then go nearly 24 minutes without allowing a shot, until Medgar's Belco Guendeba rifled one on-goal at 80:54, which was saved by Cruz.

Medgar Evers had an incredible scoring chance in the final three seconds of the CUNYAC contest, but Angelo Valerio's shot in the box sailed wide and high of the net, clinching the victory for the Cardinals.

York College held the advantage in shots (23-12) and shots on goal (8-5). Medgar Evers posted a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Cruz (1-0-1) maintained his fine form, producing five saves on his way to a first-career clean sheet. Nunez (0-6-1) stopped seven shots in the Cougar net.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Monday evening, as the Cougars will travel to Reinhart Field in Throggs Neck, NY to take on SUNY Maritime in non-conference action. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
