Cougars turned back by Privateers and Falcons in tri-match at Albertus Magnus in New Haven

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Privateers of SUNY Maritime in a neutral contest in three sets by scores of 7-25, 12-25, and 8-25, before suffering a three-set defeat against host Albertus Magnus by scores of 10-25, 8-25, and 15-25. With that aforementioned output, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-10 on the 2025 campaign, while SUNY Maritime improved to 7-6, and the Falcons moved to 8-9.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, veteran Jennifer Metra contributed a team-high two kills. Additionally, Aliyah Chapman led all Cougars in digs with four, and Sariyah Brumaire's two assists were a team-best.
 
Privateers highlights vs. Cougars
 
Grace Devaney led the way for SUNY Maritime in its victory, as her nine kills led all players (9-3-18, .333). Her 14 service aces were also a match-high, and she contributed five digs, as well. Addison Weist recorded six kills (6-1-11, .455), six service aces, and a pair of digs, and Mikaela Thiel's nine assists led all players. Finally, it was Olivia Casabona registering a match-high six digs.
 
How the match unfolded
 
SUNY Maritime dominated the opening set, winning it 25-7. The Privateers didn't commit an attack error (9-0-13), hitting .692. Additionally, the Privateers piled 10 service aces, with Devaney and Weist contributing three apiece. Chapman and Shanya Aitcheson notched kills for the Cougars in the opening set.

The Privateers set the tone for the second set early, rattling off six consecutive points (five courtesy of Mikaela Thiel service aces) to snatch a 6-0 advantage. The Cougars answered back with a sensational run of their own, scoring six straight via a Brumaire service ace and five Privateer miscues to knot the set at six apiece.

After SUNY Maritime re-took the lead with a Devaney kill, attack errors by Xiena Rodriguez, Devaney, and Olivia Casabona gave Medgar Evers a 9-7 advantage. The Cougars later held a 12-10 advantage, before the Privateers went on a 15-0 run to capture set number two, 25-12. Devaney recorded eight aces during that aforementioned spurt, with Weist adding two kills, as well.

Medgar Evers kept things respectable in the third, trailing just 9-5, before an 8-0 run by SUNY Maritime boosted the Privateers' lead to a commanding 12 points, 17-5. During that spurt, Weist notched three service aces and a kill, with Rodriguez and Lizzie Phillips each adding a kill as well. SUNY Maritime outscored Medgar Evers 8-3 for the remainder of the set, finishing it five straight, including two kills by Devaney, and three service aces by Rodriguez.

SUNY Maritime hit .280 for the match (25-11-50), while Medgar Evers hit in the negative. The Privateers notched 35 service aces while the Cougars had two, and SUNY Maritime held a 22-4 edge in assists.

Metra contributed a team-high three kills to go along with five digs. Additionally, Brumaire's six digs and two assists were both team-highs, and Sarah Vallon added four digs as well.
 
Falcons highlights vs. Cougars
 
Paula Matheus led the way for Albertus Magnus, notching a match-high seven kills (7-2-10, .500). Alondra Acosta and Jazmine Taboad Negro added four kills apiece, and Isabella Leatherman's eight service aces led all players. Jayden Haddaway's 10 digs were a match-high, and Savanna Smith's nine assists were the most for the contest.
 
How the match unfolded
 
Albertus raced out to a 7-2 lead in set one as Yarieshka Sierra had five consecutive aces early on. As a team, the Falcons notched 12 service aces in the first set as Alexys Signor had three of her one and Alyssa Valentine, Alyna Ovalles, and Shalese Gordon earned one apiece. Metra and Brumaire registered a kill apiece in the opening set, with Chapman adding a service ace.
 
Medgar Evers snatched an early 4-3 advantage in the second set, but but a kill from Sophie Cseszko and an ace by Jayden Haddaway catapulted the Falcons ahead, 9-4. Savanna Smith added a kill later on, followed by two more aces by Ovalles to boost Albertus Magnus' lead to 13-5. The Falcons were never threatened, as Leatherman closed out the set with five straight service aces to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
The Cougars and Falcons were knotted five times during the early stages of the third set. With the set tied 10-10, the Falcons scored seven straight points, including three more service aces by Leatherman, and kills from Matheus, Smith and Acosta to make it 17-14. The Cougars crept back to within three at 18-15, but the Falcons scored the final seven points, which included an ace by Matheus and kills by Camila Queiroz and Ayanna Hubbard.

SUNY Maritime hit .221 for the match (29-14-68), while Medgar Evers hit in the negative. The Privateers notched 27 service aces while the Cougars had four, and SUNY Maritime held edges in digs (34-23) and assists (27-4), as well.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars travel to CCNY's Nat Holman Gymnasium for a clash with the Beavers. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
