Cougars silenced by Beavers 3-0 in CUNYAC clash at Nat Holman Gymnasium Tuesday evening

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team lost a CUNYAC contest on Tuesday evening, falling to the Beavers of the City College of New York by scores of 7-25, 11-25, and 10-25. The match took place at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in Upper Manhattan. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-11 on the 2025 campaign (0-3 CUNYAC), while the hosts moved to 4-12 (1-2 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Jennifer Metra registered a team-high four kills to go along with four digs. Aliyah Chapman's six digs were a team-high, and Sariyah Brumaire and Brittany Palacios tied for the team-high of two assists.

Ivanna Zamora Sanchez led all players on the evening with seven kills (7-2-10, .500). Her nine assists were also a match-best, and she also added four service aces and two digs. Rachael Reyes recorded five kills, three digs, and two service aces, and Gia Skenderi finalized her evening with four kills, five service aces, and a match-high seven digs. Finally, it was Jia Hua Lia finished with five service aces and six digs.

In the opening set, with CCNY holding a 7-4 lead, the hosts rattled off 12 straight points to take a commanding 19-4 advantage. Lia notched four service aces during that aforementioned run, with Sanchez adding a pair of kills, as well. The Cougars responded with three consecutive points courtesy of a pair of Beaver attack errors, and a service ace by Metra, but the hosts closed out the set with five consecutive points (a kill apiece by Sanchez, Rachael Reyes, and Nila Tom, and two service aces by Sanchez) to take a 1-0 lead.

Set number two saw CCNY take a commanding 16-6 advantage before a Metra kill, and attack errors by Rayhanna Bailey and Skenderi, brought the Cougars to within seven, 16-9. After the teams traded the next two points, the Beavers registered seven straight (highlighted by four aces by Nila) to go up by 14, 24-10. The Beavers would eventually win the set 25-11, capping it off with a Reyes kill.

Medgar Evers kept the third set close in the early stages, with Metra slamming home a kill to pull the Cougars to within three, 7-4. The Beavers responded with yet another big run, however, scoring the next nine points to go up 16-4. Skenderi collected four service aces during that run, with Kejsi Metko also adding two kills. CCNY never trailed by less than 11 the rest of the way, winning it, 25-10.

For the CUNYAC clash, the Beavers hit .286 on the evening (32-12-70), while the Cougars hit in the negative. CCNY held a commanding 22-3 edge in service aces, while also notching 30 digs to Medgar Evers' 16.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Thursday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the Clark Athletic Center in Westbury, NY to battle the Panthers of SUNY Old Westbury in non-conference action. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
