Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Despite hearty effort, Cougars drop 2025-2026 home opener to Valley Forge University

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team dropped its home opener on Tuesday evening, falling to the Patriots of Valley Forge University by a score of 90-68. The non-conference clash took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers slipped to 0-3 on the 2025-2026 campaign, while Valley Forge University leveled at 1-1.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, newcomer Rhommy Holder looked strong in putting together 25 quality minutes for the hosts, scoring a team-high 18 points (7-12 FG, 4-8 3pt-FG) to go along with three rebounds and a pair of dimes. Sharpshooting senior Michael Perez nailed three trifectas, finishing with 15 points, three assists, and two rebounds, and Joash Beaton finalized his evening with 11 points, three boards, and three helpers. Ahmed Toure's eight rebounds led Medgar Evers.

Three players scored in double figures for Valley Forge University in its victory, including Isaiah Reece, as the standout converted on 10 of 14 shot attempts to finish with a game-high 21 points. He also added three rebounds, a game-high three blocked shots, two assists, and two steals. Denzel Pierre drained four triples, finishing with 19 points, four rebounds, and three steals, and Christian Metevia (4-7 FG, 5-7 FT) added 13 points. Deven Dowdie flirted with a registering a double-double, falling just two points short (he had eight points, a game-high 10 assists, and seven rebounds), and William Lawder's 10 rebounds led all players.

Valley Forge University raced out to an early 27-12 advantage in the opening 8:54 of action, but an 11-3 Cougars run over a span of 2:37 brought the hosts to within seven, 30-23, with 8:29 remaining in the opening session. That aforementioned Medgar Evers run was sparked by Perez's seven points during the stretch. The Patriots responded to the Cougars' run by closing out the opening half with a 16-6 run, led by Reece's 11-point scoring barrage in down the stretch of the period. At break, Valley Forge led 46-29.

The visitors spent the opening 9:30 of the second session building a seemingly-comfortable 26-point advantage, as the Patriots went up 74-48. Medgar Evers, however, continued to claw. Over a span of 4:34, the Cougars netted 12 consecutive points, thanks to a bucket by Toure, seven consecutive points by Beaton, and a three-point conversion by Holder. That inched the Cougars to within 14, 74-60, with 5:56 to go.

Just as they did in the opening half, the Patriots answered that previous Cougars rally with a strong stretch, as Valley Forge would close the game by scoring 16 of the contest's final 24 points to account for the 22-point margin of victory.

For the evening, the visitors earned a conversion rate of 52.9 percent (36-68), which included a 52.6 percent clip from downtown (10-19). Medgar Evers shot well from the floor, nailing 27 of 65 attempts (41.5 percent), but the Cougars struggled from long range (9-25, 36 percent) and at the stripe (5-12, 41.7 percent). Valley Forge held advantages in the rebounding (46-33), assist (21-19), steal (10-7), and block (4-2) columns, and the teams turned the ball over 17 times apiece.

Medgar Evers will return to action Friday evening, as the team welcomes Oberlin College to the Cougars Cave for a non-conference affair. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
