Cougars put together late surge, but Oberlin rights the ship, defeats Medgar Evers 91-72

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest on Friday evening, falling to the Yeomen of Oberlin College by a score of 91-72. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 0-4 on the 2025-2026 campaign, while the Yeomen improved to a record of 2-2.

Despite the loss for the hosts, veterans Michael Perez and Joash Beaton tied for the game-high of 15 points. Perez also contributed a game-high five assists, tied for the team-high of four rebounds, and tied for the game-high of three steals. In addition to Beaton's 15 points, he also added three boards, two assists, and a pair of steals. Zachary Bussey scored in double figures, netting 11 points, dishing four assists, and pulling down a pair of rebounds, and Nicholas Bocharov and Rhommy Holder scored nine and eight points, respectively.

For Oberlin, Liam Gray and Alasan Njie-Morgan tied for the team-high of 11 points, which each of the aforementioned players connecting on three triples. JJ Gray and Augustus Donohue added nine points apiece, and Uros Petrusic contributed eight points, three rebounds,
and two assists. Milun Micanovic's six rebounds were a game-high.

Oberlin used the opening 3:59 of the contest to open an 8-0 lead, thanks to converted three-point baskets by Gray and Donohue, and a hoop by Matt Andreopoulos. Medgar Evers answered with triples by Beaton and Bussey on their next two possessions to inch to within two, 8-6.

The Cougars kept the game tight early, trailing just 12-10 following a pair of converted freebees by Perez with 11:39 remaining in the half, but a 13-2 run by Oberlin over a span of 5:23 put the Yeoman ahead by 13, 25-12. Oberlin gradually build its lead as time trickled down in the opening half, finishing the rest of the period by scoring 17 of the game's next 28 points to take a 42-23 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The Yeomen's biggest lead in the second half was 28 points (69-41) with 8:41 to go, and Oberlin held a seemingly comfortable 77-52 advantage with 6:47 to go following a converted layup by Mouhamed Toure, but Medgar Evers kicked into gear and started a late push.

After the teams traded triples on the next two possessions (Perez hitting a three-point basket for Medgar Evers, Shea Laursen nailing one for Oberlin), the Cougars rattled off 11 consecutive points over a span of 2:20 to inch to within 14, 80-66, with 4:02 to play. That aforementioned run featured a converted triple by Omari Hinds, a hoop by Beaton, and back-to-back drained trifectas by Bussey.

Following a timeout by Oberlin, the Yeomen outscored the Cougars 11-6 down the stretch to account for the 19-point margin of victory (91-72).

The Yeoman connected on 50.7 percent of their attempts from the floor (36-71), connecting on 14 triples for the evening. Oberlin also made the most of their opportunities at the stripe, nailing five of their seven freebees (71.4 percent). Medgar Evers shot the basketball well, hitting on 23 of 54 attempts (42.6 percent). The Cougars also drained 12 trifectas and were excellent from the free throw line, earning a conversion rate of 82.4 percent (14-17).

Medgar Evers will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the Hill Center to battle the Bears of St. Joseph's University in a non-conference borough affair. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
