Men's basketball outworked by St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn in non-conference action at Hill Center

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team lost an inter-borough non-conference contest on Tuesday evening, falling to the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn by a score of 92-64. The contest took place at the Hill Center in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 0-5 on the 2025-2026 campaign, while the Bears improved to 2-2.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, senior Michael Perez registered a team-high 12 points, connecting on a pair of triples and both of his free throw attempts. He also snatched four rebounds, as well. Omari Hinds and Nicholas Bocharov scored 10 points apiece, with Hinds adding six rebounds, and Bocharov finalizing his evening with three boards and a pair of assists. Trevonne Tcha contributed eight points and a team-high nine rebounds, and Justin Rossario netted six points for the visitors.

St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn was paced by Jorden Bennett's game-highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jonathan Reno added 13 points (4-4 FT), a game-high seven dimes, and four rebounds, and Justin Munson finalized his evening with 10 points and five rebounds. Nazareth Warren (3-3 FG, 3-4 FT) finished with nine points, and Adam Jasaraj contributed eight points and eight boards.

Trailing 11-8 a little over eight minutes into the opening half, newcomer Rhommy Holder drilled a long triple to knot the contest at 11-all. What followed was a ferocious run by the hosts, as the Bears put together a 17-3 run over the ensuing 6:30 of action to take a 28-14 advantage. Jasaraj, Reno, and Austin Wrynn scored five points apiece during that aforementioned run.

After a converted hoop by Perez halted the hosts' run, the Bears responded with a 16-9 run to close the period, taking a 44-25 advantage into the locker room at the break. Medgar Evers converted on just eight out of 35 shots in the opening 20 minutes of action (22.8 percent).

In the second half, St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn maintained control of the contest, as the closest the Cougars drew the entire session was within 16 (48-32) following a drained freebee by Hinds with 16:13 remaining. The Bears' versatile attack included Reno's effectiveness on offense, Jasaraj's dominance in the paint on control on the glass, and Wrynn displaying toughness on both ends of the floor. The Bears scored 32 points in the paint over the final 20 minutes of action, eventually taking a lead as large as 33 points, before winning the contest by 28.

The Bears were the far better team shooting the basketball for the evening, as the hosts converted on 42.4 percent of their attempts (36-85), while the Cougars hit just 21 shots (21-73) and earned a shooting percentage of 28.8. Medgar Evers was more efficient at the stripe, nailing 12 of 14 attempts (85.7 percent) compared to the hosts' conversion rate of 66.7 percent (14-21). St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn held big advantages in rebounds (66-38), assists (20-9), and blocked shots (4-1), and a modest edge in steals (10-7). The Bears narrowly won the turnover battle, committing 16 miscues compared to 19 for the visitors.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will travel to the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center to battle Centenary University (NJ) in a non-conference game. Start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
