Women's basketball overwhelmed by Manhattanville in 2025-2026 home opener as Valiants win handily

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team dropped its home opener on Wednesday evening, falling to the Valiants of Manhattanville University by a score of 112-38. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dropped to 0-2 on the 2025-2026 campaign, while the Valiants leveled their record at 1-1.und

Despite the loss for the Cougars, newcomer Moutiatou Djibring posted a double-double, scoring a team-high 12 points while snatching a game-high 11 rebounds. Jah Gunter finished with 11 points and a pair of rebounds, and Enphani Huskey finalized her evening with seven points and five rebounds. Finally, it was veteran Aaliyah Lyons finishing with seven points, two rebounds, and a pair of dimes.

Five players scored in double figures for Manhattanville University, including Madison Carlo. Carlo connected on eight of her 14 attempts from the floor, including four out of eight from downtown, to finish with a game-high 20 points. She also registered a pair of assists on the night. Esther Ramos (6-10 FG) contributed 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and Amanda Orlando and Ryan Ford scored 11 points apiece. Ford also grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds and dished four assists. Finally, it was Maia Valazquez scoring 10 points, tallying three steals, and grabbing three rebounds.

Manhattanville dominated the game from start to finish, leading 27-4 after 10 minutes of action, and 57-13 at the half. After the third quarter was more closely contested (26-17 in favor of the Valiants), the visitors outscored Medgar Evers 29-8 in the final period to account for the large margin of victory.

The Valiants converted on 48.1 percent of their shots from the floor (39-81), while also draining eight out of 20 from downtown (40 percent) and 26 out of 33 (78.8 percent) from the line. Medgar Evers struggled to find rhythm offensively, hitting on just 12 out of 62 shot attempts (19.4 percent) and just 13 out of 24 from the stripe (54.2 percent).

Manhattanville snatched 55 rebounds to Medgar Evers' 44, and the Valiants also held advantages in assists (27-5) and steals (18-6). The teams swatted four shots apiece, and Manhattanville won the turnover battle, committing just 11 miscues, while the Cougars had 34.

Medgar Evers will return to action this weekend, as they'll travel to Boston, Massachusetts to compete in the Emmanuel College Tip-Off Tournament. The Cougars will take on Emmanuel on Saturday at 3:00pm, and then they'll return to action the following day to take on either Stevens or RIT in the consolation or championship game. All contests will take place at the Jean Yawkey Center.
