Cougars struggle at Emmanuel College Tip-Off Tournament, dropping games to Saints and Ducks

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team endured a difficult weekend, dropping a pair of games in the Emmanuel College Tip-Off Tournament. This past Saturday, the Cougars fell to the Saints of Emmanuel by a score of 108-31. A day later in the consolation game, Medgar Evers lost to Stevens Institute of Technology, 101-36. With that aforementioned output, the Cougars are now 0-4 on the 2025-2026 campaign. The Saints improved to 1-0, while the Ducks are now 2-2.

November 15, 2025: Emmanuel 108, Medgar Evers 31

Despite the loss for the Cougars, veteran Jennifer Metra recorded team-highs of 11 points and four assists. Newcomers Jah Gunter and Enphani Huskey scored six points apiece, and Shanya Aitcheson tied for the game-high of six rebounds.

Five players scored in double figures for the Saints, including Nylah Mitchell (10-13 FG), as her 21 points led all players. He also swiped four steals and snatched three boards on the evening. Geanna Bryant scored 12 points, posted game-highs of six steals and five assists, and also pulled down five rebounds. Nylah Moore netted 12 points while collecting four boards, and Aylana Mergilles scored 11 points while snatching six boards. Finally, Kalia Saunders scored 10 points, snatched five boards, and tallied three steals.

The Saints opened the game shooting 13-for-25 from the field in the first quarter, going on a 25-1 run during the period. Emmanuel was in control from the opening stages of the contest, taking a 29-6 advantage following the conclusion of the opening quarter. The lead continued to expand in the second period, with Emmanuel shooting 13-for-24 from the floor and outscoring Medgar Evers 37-8. At the break, the hosts led 66-14.

Emmanuel scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to stretch its advantage to 63 points (77-63), and Medgar Evers was only able to convert on two field goals in the period (one apiece by Metra and Gunter), as the hosts led by 69 after 30 minutes (92-23). The Saints doubled-up the Cougars in the fourth, outscoring them 16-8 to account for the 77-point margin of victory.

The hosts earned a conversion rate of 55 percent for the game (44-80), and connected on 64.6 percent of their attempts inside the arc (42-65). Emmanuel also shot 72 percent from the free throw line (18-25). Medgar Evers made just nine shots on the night, shooting 21.4 percent (9-42). The Cougars also misfired on 17 freebees (13-30, 43.3 percent). Emmanuel held a 49-28 edge on the glass, and a 30-13 advantage in steals. The Saints also held a 22-2 edge in assists, and swatted four shots compared to none for Medgar Evers. The Cougars turned the ball over 49 times, while the Saints committed 26 miscues.

November 15, 2025: Stevens Institute 101, Medgar Evers 36

Leading the way for the Cougars against the Ducks was Gunter (4-6 FT), as she scored a team-high 10 points while leading all players in rebounds with nine. Huskey added nine points and five rebounds, and Metra finalized her afternoon with four points, seven rebounds, and a pair of steals.

Stevens Institute was paced by Grace Love, as she connected on five of her seven shot attempts, including four out of five from downtown, to finish with a game-high 14 points. Maya Abramson netted 11 points while swiping a game-high five steals and adding three assists, and Dorothy Loffredo and Ceejay Thomas contributed nine points apiece. Loffredo, in addition to her nine points, grabbed four rebounds and dished three assists.

Neither team got on the board until just past two minutes in, when Stevens put together a ferocious 15-0 run that spanned less than 2:30. Loffredo sparked the Ducks during that aforementioned stretch, as she netted nine of her team's 15 points. After Medgar Evers outscored Stevens 6-4 over the ensuing 1:12 (via two buckets by Huskey, and one by Brianna Merger), the Ducks went on another 15-2 run to take a 34-8 advantage at the end of the quarter.

Stevens' Audrey Kehoe scored the opening six points of the second quarter to push the Ducks' commanding edge to 32, 40-8. Maja Skopic (twice), Camryn Kinne, Trisha Nair, Sugar Williams, and Katherine Bogutsky all then added on for Stevens, as the Ducks pushed their advantage to 55-12 with three minutes until the half. Stevens would score nine of the final 11 points of the second quarter to snatch a 64-14 lead at the break.

In the third quarter, Stevens held 75-19, but the Cougars put together a 7-0 run (sparked by three points from newcomer Moutiatou Djibring, and a bucket apiece from Gunter and Metra) to pull to within 75-26 with 2:46 remaining in the third quarter. The Ducks responded with a 7-2 run to end the period, taking an 82-28 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Stevens outscored Medgar Evers by a count of 19-8 in the fourth quarter.

The Ducks earned a conversion rate of 50.6 percent (40-79) for the afternoon. Stevens drained 50 percent of its three-point attempts (9-18), and nailed 12 out of 17 freebees (70.6 percent). The Cougars connected on just 12 out of 51 shots (23.5 percent) and misfired on nine free throws (11-20, 55 percent). Stevens held advantages in assists (31-3) and steals (20-3), while Medgar Evers held a 45-39 edge on the glass, and also swatted three shots to the Ducks' two. Stevens committed just eight turnovers, while the Cougars finished with 38.

Next Up for the Cougars

Medgar Evers will now have five days off before returning to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will travel to the Bradley Center in Mahwah, NJ to take on Ramapo College. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
