Cougars swept by Scarlet Raptors, Bears in final non-conference matches of 2025 season

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Sunday afternoon, falling to host Rutgers-Camden by scores of 2-25, 4-25, and 5-25, before losing to the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn by scores of 9-25, 3-25, and 11-25. With the two defeats, the Cougars dipped to 0-18 on the 2025 campaign. The Scarlet Raptors improved to 11-18, and the Bears improved to 11-10 on the year.

In the Cougars' loss to Rutgers-Camden, veteran Jennifer Metra contributed a service ace. Shanya Aitcheson's four digs led all players, and Bryanna Merger chipped in with three digs for the match.

The Scarlet Raptors were paced by Asha Pensa Johnson's stellar effort, as she registered a match-high eight kills on nine attack attempts, earning a hitting percentage of .889. Taylor White contributed four kills, while Jana Jovanovic earned three. Avery Ang's 16 assists led all players, and Ang and Gabby Gbolahan's eight service aces apiece tied for the match-high.

Rutgers-Camden dominated the match from start to finish, earning a team hitting percentage of .526 (23-3-38) while the Cougars hit in the negative. The hosts also held a staggering 32-1 edge in service aces, while Medgar Evers owned a 12-7 advantage in digs.

In Medgar Evers' loss to St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn, Metra and Aitcheson tied for the team-high of two kills apiece, while Aitcheson's two service aces led the Cougars. Metra, Merger, and Danajah Lawrence each tied for the team-best of three digs.

Nikiya Philemon and Abby Cox earned perfect 1.000 hitting percentages for the Bears, while Philemon finishing with five kills on five attempts, and Cox finalizing the match with four kills on four swats. Cox's 10 service aces were also a match-high, and Rachel Meltsin's 13 assists led all players.

Medgar Evers trailed 15-2 in the opening set against St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn before a pair of Bears attack errors and two Aitcheson service aces brought the Cougars to within nine at 15-6. The Bears would outscore the Cougars 10-3 the rest of the way, closing out set one via a kill by DiVittorio, and an attack error by Aitcheson.

Set two was all Bears, as St. Joseph's University scored the opening 12 points (highlighted by four aces from Abigail Encinia, and a kill apiece by Cox and Madeleine Nino). After an attack error by Nino got the Cougars on the board, the Bears rattled off six straight to balloon its lead to 18-1, before eventually finishing off the set by securing seven of the ensuing nine points and winning it, 25-3.

The Cougars earned five kills in the third and final set (two by Metra, a pair by Aitcheson, and one by Aliyah Chapman), but the Bears used 10 service aces and six kills to control the pace of the set, winning it, 25-11, and capturing the match, 3-0.

For the contest, St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn hit .233 (20-10-43), while Medgar Evers hit in the negative. The Bears held a 26-2 edge in service aces, and the teams collected 13 digs apiece.

Medgar Evers will wrap up its 2025 season on Tuesday, heading to Brooklyn College for a CUNYAC match with the Bulldogs. Start-time at the West Quad Gymnasium is scheduled for 6:00pm.
