Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball, despite hearty efforts, drop both contests in 2025-2026 Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial Tournament

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team competed in the 2025-2026 Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial Women's Basketball Tournament this weekend, and the Cougars dropped a pair of contests, falling to the USMMA King's Point Mariners 81-58 on Saturday, before dropping the consolation contest to the Chargers of Colby Sawyer by a score of 76-59.

With the two setbacks, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 0-7 on the year. The Chargers, who lost on day one of the tournament to New York University, leveled their record on the year at 4-4.

The Violets of New York University, who are the two-time defending Division III National titlists, won the tournament, capturing their 68th and 69th consecutive victories. The Violets (7-0) defeated the Chargers 115-42 on Saturday, before taking the tournament's championship on Sunday with a 102-70 win over USMMA. The Mariners went 1-1 on the weekend, moving to 5-2 on the year.

Caroline Peper of New York University, who scored 41 points in the championship game against USMMA, earned Most Valuable Player honors for the tournament. Brook Batchelor (New York University), Carolae Barton (USMMA King's Point), Emily Leonard (Colby Sawyer), and Alexis Davis (Medgar Evers) all earned All-Tournament honors.

November 29, 2025: Mariners 81, Cougars 58

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, veteran Alexis Davis put forth perhaps her strongest performance of the 2025-2026 season, as the standout scored a team-high 23 points (10-12 FT) to go along with game-highs of 16 rebounds and three blocked shots. She also added two steals, as well. Aaliyah Lyons' versatile effort saw her score 17 points, record game-highs of six assists and four steals, and grab three rebounds, and Jennifer Metra and Jah Gunter scored seven and six points, respectively.

Three players scored 18 points or more for the victorious Mariners of USMMA, including Carolae Barton, as the standout connected on 10 of her 11 attempts from the floor, as well as five of her six shots from the stripe, to finish with a game-high 25 points. She also collected eight rebounds while dishing two assists, as well. Emily Grasseler (10-10 FT) posted a double-double with 22 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, and two steals, and Hannah Ramsden (4-4 FT) netted 18 points while collecting six rebounds and dishing three assists.

USMMA controlled the first half of the game, gradually building its lead with a healthy balance of scoring in the paint and defensive brilliance. The Mariners held the Cougars to just three converted field goals in the opening 10 minutes, and held a 24-13 advantage at the conclusion of the first quarter.

Medgar Evers used a converted triple by Davis and a drained free throw by Lyons to inch to within seven points (24-17) with 7:49 remaining in the half, but the Mariners outscored the hosts 24-4 for the remainder of the session to take a commanding 48-21 edge into the locker room at halftime. During that aforementioned spurt for USMMA, Barton played exceptionally, netting 12 points, while Grasseler added six.

The Mariners' advantage ballooned to 30 (64-34) with 2:28 remaining in the third quarter, but the Cougars refused to quit, closing out the period on a 9-2 run to inch to within 23 (66-43) after 30 minutes of action. Davis contributed five points during that run, with Gunter and Lyons accounted for two apiece.

After Sydney Brown opened the final period with a bucket for the visitors, the Cougars put together another run, this time an 8-0 spurt over a span of 2:14, to pull to within 17 (68-51) with 7:43 remaining. Five different Cougars, including Davis, Lyons, Gunter, Metra, and Moutiatou Djibring scored during that stretch for the hosts.

Unfortunately for Medgar Evers, a comeback attempt would end following that aforementioned push, as USMMA went on an 8-0 run (led by Ramsden's four points) to go back up by 25 (76-51). The Mariners wouldn't lead by any fewer than 21 points the rest of the way, eventually advancing to win by 23 (81-58).

Both squads shot under 40 percent for the game, with USMMA earning a conversion rate of 39.7 percent (27-68), and the Cougars connecting on 31.1 percent of their shots (19-61). The Mariners held a sizable 51-41 edge on the glass, while also holding a slim 13-11 advantage in the steals column. USMMA dished 19 assists on the afternoon to Medgar Evers' 12, and the visitors won the turnover battle, committing 19 miscues, while the Cougars finished with 25.

November 30, 2025: Chargers 76, Cougars 59

Despite the Cougars' loss to the Chargers, Lyons scored a team-high 19 points while snatching eight rebounds and adding three steals. Davis recorded another double-double, as the standout scored 14 points while tying for the team-high of 11 rebounds, and Jennifer Metra contributed 12 points, a game-high six assists, three steals, and a pair of rebounds.

Colby Sawyer's Emily Leonard was masterful in the Chargers' victory, as she connected on nine of her 11 attempts from the floor, including all six of her three-point launches, to finish with a game-high 24 points. She also snatched three rebounds, as well. Makenna Grillone contributed 12 points and four boards, and Emma Greenan registered a double-double with 10 points, and a game-high 12 rebounds. She also tied for the team-high of five assists, while tying for the game-high of two swatted shots.

In a very tightly-contested first quarter, neither squad led by more than three points until Davis converted on a layup to put Medgar Evers up 13-8 with 4:29 left in the period. A pair of buckets by Metra aided the Cougars and helped them maintain a lead, as Medgar Evers led 19-15 after 10 minutes of play.

The teams exchanged the lead six times in the opening 7:29 of the quarter, with Lyons' converted free throw putting the Cougars ahead 30-29. Colby Sawyer took the lead on a pair Greenan free throws, and Grillone split a pair of freebees to put the visitors ahead 32-30. Medgar Evers newcomer Enphani Huskey then hit a layup to knot the contest at 32-all. The teams when exchanged baskets on the next three possessions, giving the Chargers a slim 36-34 edge at the half.

The Cougars stayed within striking distance for a good portion of the third quarter, as Metra's bucket pulled Medgar Evers to within six (46-40) with 4:16 to go in the third, but an 8-3 run by Colby Sawyer to close out the quarter put the Chargers ahead 54-43 after 30 minutes of action.

In the fourth, Colby Sawyer led by as many as 19 points, and never led by any fewer than 13, staying in control of the contest, as their late lead was never threatened.

The Chargers converted on 42.2 percent of their attempts from the floor for the game (27-64), while the Cougars connected on just 23 of 72 shots (31.9 percent). Both teams struggled from the line, with Colby Sawyer missing 11 free throws (14-25, 56 percent), and Medgar Evers misfiring on 16 (13-29, 44.8 percent). Both teams pulled down 47 rebounds, and the Chargers doubled-up the Cougars, registering 22 assists to Medgar Evers' 11. Medgar Evers held an 11-10 edge in steals, while also recording three swatted shots to Colby's two. The Chargers' narrowly won the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues, while the Cougars had 19.
