Cougars capture first victory of 2025-2026 campaign with 79-33 demolition of CUNYAC foe York College

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team registered its first victory of the 2025-2026 campaign on Friday evening, dominating the Cardinals of York College in CUNYAC action by a score of 79-33. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, Medgar Evers improved to a mark of 1-7 on the year (1-0 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals dipped to 0-6 (0-1 CUNYAC).

Five players scored in double figures for the victorious Cougars, including senior Alexis Davis, as the standout posted another double-double with a game-high 17 points, a team-best 12 rebounds, five steals, and a pair of assists. Newcomer Jah Gunter netted 13 points, snatched six rebounds, and tied for the game-high of six steals. Sapphira Bamfield added 12 points and four boards, and Aaliyah Lyons recorded a triple-double, netting 11 points, leading all players with 12 assists, and collecting 11 boards. She also swiped six steals, as well. Finally, it was Jennifer Metra finalizing her evening with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Despite the loss for York College, veteran Imani Gibson netted a game-high nine points while snatching eight rebounds and swiping four steals. Arta Gjeloshi added eight points, three boards, and a pair of assists, and Tyla Hooks contributed six points and two rebounds on the evening.

The Cougars never trailed in the CUNYAC clash. Leading 5-4 just 2:37 into the contest, Medgar Evers outscored the visitors 22-4 the rest of the way to take a commanding 27-8 advantage after one. Davis' seven points paced the hosts in that aforementioned big quarter, and Lyons' buzzer-beating trifecta to cap the period had the hosts feeling confident after 10 minutes of action.

Medgar Evers used the opening 6:50 of the second quarter to build its advantage, outscoring the Cardinals 12-2 to snatch a commanding 41-10 edge. Bamfield netted six points during that spurt, with Davis contributing another four. York closed the half with a modest 8-3 push, but the Cougars were still well in control, taking a 44-18 lead into the locker room as time expired on the first half.

The third quarter was perhaps the Cougars' best period of the season, as the hosts outscored York College 21-2 in a complete show of domination. Lyons found Bryanna Merger, who buried a long triple to put the Cougars ahead 47-18 just 53 seconds into the period. Shortly later, with the hosts leading 49-18, Hooks with convert on a bucket for the visitors, before the Cougars would close the period on a 16-0 spurt to take a 45-point lead (65-20) into the fourth. During that aforementioned run, Lyons netted six points, with Davis and Moutiatou Djibring adding four apiece.

In the fourth quarter, the Cougars bumped their lead to as many as 47 points, and never led by any fewer than 43, eventually going on to win the CUNYAC contest by 46 (79-33).

Medgar Evers had it working from both sides of the floor, as the Cougars connected on 43.6 percent of its attempts from the hardwood (34-78) while holding York College to 19.4 percent shooting (12-62). The Cougars dominated the glass, snatching 57 rebounds compared to 40 for the Cardinals, and the hosts held a sizeable 28-13 edge in steals. Medgar Evers dished 21 assists compared to York's seven, and the Cardinals held a 4-1 advantage in blocks. The teams combined for 72 turnovers on the evening, with York committing 41, and the Cougars 31.

The Cougars will look to make it two consecutive victories on Thursday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to the ARC Arena to battle the Bearcats of Baruch College. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 5:30pm.
