Veteran Alexis Davis pours in game-high 22 points in women's basketball's season-opening loss to Bears

Box Score The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team lost of its 2025-2026 season-opener on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn by a score of 87-59. The game took place at the Hill Center in Brooklyn, NY. The contest served as the season-opener for the non-conference borough foes.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, veteran Alexis Davis was masterful for Medgar Evers, as she connected on nine of her 13 attempts from the floor to finish with a team-high 22 points. Additionally, her eight rebounds led all Cougars. Aaliyah Lyons turned in a strong effort in the opener as well, scoring 15 points while snatching six rebounds, tying for the game-high of four steals, dishing two assists, and blocking a shot. Finally, it was newcomer Jah Gunter contributing 15 points, snatching four rebounds, and dishing three assists.

For the Bears, Mercedes Perez connected on 10 of her 15 attempts from the floor, including six of eight from long range, to finalize her afternoon with a game-high 29 points. She also added three rebounds and a pair of assists. Kristen Donovan (8-16 FG) netted 21 points while collecting four boards, dishing two assists, tallying two steals, and swatting two shots, and Nikki Grech contributed eight points and five rebounds.

St. Joseph's University led 22-9 with 2:33 remaining in the first quarter, but the Cougars used a 19-4 run over a span of 5:34 to catapult ahead by a score of 28-26. That aforementioned run was highlighted by Lyons' nine points, and Davis' seven.

Over the ensuing 4:29 of action, the non-conference foes exchanged the lead seven times, with the final pendulum swing coming via Grech's converted layup with 2:30 to go to put St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn ahead, 37-36. Later in the half, with the Bears clinging to a slim 42-40 edge and time winding down, Donovan nailed a triple right before the buzzer to give the Bears a 45-40 advantage at the break.

The turning point in the game came in the third quarter, as the Bears dominated the period, outscoring the Cougars by a count of 29-9.

Perez set the tone for the big quarter by the hosts, knocking down consecutive triples in the opening minute to put the Bears ahead 51-40. Later, with 7:19 remaining in the third, a converted freebee by Gunter brought the Cougars to within eight (53-45), but the hosts netted 19 of the next 21 points to take a commanding 72-47 advantage, and eventually led by 23 at the end of three (72-49). Perez's nine points led the aforementioned charge by St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn.

In the fourth quarter, the Bears' lead grew to 30 (83-53) with 5:46 remaining. A miniature 5-0 run by Medgar Evers (courtesy of a converted free throw apiece by Davis, Lyons, and Gunter, and a bucket by Davis) pulled Medgar to within 25 (83-58) with 1:38 to go, but the Bears outscored the Cougars 4-1 the rest of the way, winning the game, 87-59.

For the contest, the Bears shot 48.5 percent (32-66), while also connecting on nine of 19 from beyond-the-arc (47.4 percent). St. Joseph's University did misfire on 10 free throws, however (14-24, 58.3 percent). Medgar Evers shot 41.7 percent (20-48) from the floor, but missed 17 free throws (16-33, 48.5 percent). St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn held advantage in the rebounds (40-33), assists (13-7), and steals (14-8) columns, and the Bears also won the turnover battle, committing 21 miscues, while the Cougars had 27.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Wednesday evening, as the Cougars will play their home opener against the Valiants of Manhattanville. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 6:00pm.
