Cougars outworked by Bridgewater Eagles, Middlebury Panthers in Dr. Carol V. De Costa / Go 4 the Goal Tournament

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team hosted the Dr. Carol V. De Costa / Go 4 the Goal Tournament in recent days, with the Cougars dropping a pair of contests, falling to the Bridgewater Eagles 66-58 on Sunday, before losing the consolation contest to the Panthers of Middlebury by a score of 91-47.

With the two setbacks, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 0-12 on the year. The Panthers, who lost on day one of the tournament to Wheaton College (MA) Lyons, improved to 5-4.

The Lyons of Wheaton College (MA) won the tournament, defeating the Panthers 82-78 on Sunday, before capturing the championship with a victory over the Eagles by a score of 65-56. Wheaton College (MA) improved to a mark of 8-3 on the 2025-2026 campaign, while the Eagles leveled their record at 5-5.

Dimetri lafrate was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, with Eion Morrissey getting selected to the All-Tournament team. Other All-Tournament team honorees included Bridgewater's Maleek Richardson, Middlebury's Dominick Ducree, and Medgar Evers' Michael Perez.

December 28, 2025: Eagles 66, Cougars 58

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, the Cougars were paced by senior sharpshooter Michael Perez put forth a tremendous effort, draining seven of his 15 shot attempts, including six out of 13 from deep, to finish with a game-high 24 points. Veteran Ahmed Toure added a double-double with 11 points, and he also tied for game-highs of 11 points, two blocked shots and two steals. Omari Hinds added seven points, and Zachary Bussey and Joash Beaton finalized their afternoons with five points apiece.

Four players scored in double figures for Bridgewater, including Maleek Richardson, as he scored a team-high 17 points (8-10 FT) to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists. Jahmir Brown finished with 14 points, five boards, and four assists, and Chris Suber netted 11 points while dishing four assists and swiping a pair of steals. Carter Palmer contributed 10 points and seven rebounds, and Kyren Smith tied for the game-high of 11 rebounds.

Justin Rosario's converted layup 6:05 into the contest gave the Cougars an early 6-5 advantage, but Bridgewater responded by putting together a 10-2 run over the ensuing 3:45 to snatch a 15-8 lead.

After Toure drained a triple to pull the hosts to within four (15-11), the Eagles would score 14 of the contest's next 18 points to take a commanding 14-point advantage (29-15) with 2:36 remaining in the opening session. Medgar Evers showed grit and kept the game close, finishing the half on a 7-0 run (courtesy of a pair of converted free throws by Trevonne Tcha, a made trifecta by Perez, and a bucket by Joash Beaton) to pull to within seven (29-22) as time expired on the opening half.

Trailing by eight points (33-25) early in the second session, the Cougars rattled off eight consecutive points to knot the contest at 33-all with 15:34 left. That aforementioned charge by the hosts featured two drained Perez triples, and a bucket by Nicholas Bocharov. In what was a game of runs, the visitors responded with a 10-0 run (highlighted by Carter Palmer's five points) to snatch a 43-33 edge with 10:52 to play.

The pendulum then swung Medgar Evers' way, as the Cougars netted 11 of the game's next 13 points to close to within one (45-44), with Perez's three-point basket capping the run.

Bridgewater held a modest lead over the next 7:52, never extending its advantage beyond six points until there were 60 seconds left, as Brown drained a dagger trifecta to put the Eagles ahead 63-56. The Cougars would only connect on one field goal inside the final minute, and the Eagles sank three out of four free throws to solidify the win (66-58).

The Eagles were the more efficient team shooting the basketball, as they connected on 41.7 percent of their attempts from the floor (20-48), while the Cougars earned a conversion rate of just 34.5 percent (19-55). Bridgewater held a respectable 40-31 edge on the glass, while also swiping eight steals to Medgar Evers' seven. Each team dished 14 assists, and both squads committed 13 turnovers apiece.
 
December 29, 2025: Panthers 91, Cougars 47

In Medgar Evers' loss to the Panthers, the Cougars were led by Isaiah Grant, as he was the only player on his squad to score in double figures, netting 14. Rosario connected on three triples to finish with nine points, and Hinds added seven points and three rebounds. Toure's seven boards were a team-high for Medgar Evers.

Ducree paced Middlebury in the Panthers' victory, as he connected on eight of his 14 shot attempts to finish with a game-high 21 points. He also added three rebounds on the afternoon. Kuba Cwalina contributed 11 points, and Justin Fuerbacher finalized his day with 10 points and six boards. Mark Newell's 15 rebounds led all players.

The Panthers raced out to a 19-5 lead in the opening 6:35 of the opening session, with that aforementioned opening run featuring six points apiece from Fuerbacher and Ducree. Medgar Evers used a 6-2 spurt over the ensuing 1:17 of action to cut the deficit to 10 (21-11), with Rhommy Holder capping the run by burying a triple. Middlebury responded by scoring the next 11 points, spanning 3:47, to build a 32-11 advantage following a pair of converted free throws by Ian Murray with 8:21 remaining in the half.

Medgar Evers clawed back into the contest, closing the half on a 14-8 run to pull to within 15 (40-25) at the break. Grant netted eight points during that aforementioned charge by the Cougars.

Middlebury dominated the second half of action, outscoring the Cougars by a count of 51-22. The Panthers converted on 10 out of 11 free throws, while holding Medgar Evers to just eight made field goals in the stanza. The visitors also continued their dominance on the glass, snatching 37 boards over the final 20 minutes, while the Cougars pulled down 11 (all defensive). The Panthers' 44 point margin of victory was also their largest lead of the game.

The Panthers were very efficient shooting the basketball, connecting on 43.2 percent of their shot attempts (32-74), while also draining 19 out of 24 free throws (79.2 percent). On the flip side, Medgar Evers earned a conversion rate of just 26.2 percent (17-65), while also hitting 60 percent of its freebees (6-10). Middlebury held a staggering 69-25 edge on the glass, while also dishing 22 assists to the Cougars' 12. Medgar Evers held a 6-4 advantage in steals, and the Cougars also won the turnover battle, committing just nine miscues, while the visitors had 13.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Wednesday, January 7, as the Cougars will resume CUNYAC action with a home game against the Lightning of Lehman College. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
