Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Michael Perez pours in 26 points (9-13 FG), but Cougars run out of gas in loss to CUNYAC foe Lehman

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team suffered a CUNYAC loss on Wednesday evening, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College by a score of 92-65. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, Medgar Evers slipped to a mark of 0-13 on the 2025-2026 campaign (0-3 CUNYAC). Lehman improved to 8-6 (3-0 CUNYAC) with the triumph.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, senior Michael Perez continued his torrid scoring, as the standout connected on nine of 13 attempts from the floor, and six out of eight from the stripe, to finish with a game-high 26 points. He also added a pair of steals, as well. Veteran Joash Beaton (6-12 FG) contributed 12 points, and point guard Zachary Bussey finalized his evening with eight points, five rebounds, a game-high three steals, and two assists.

The Lightning used a balanced attack that was led by standout Amar Ndiaye, as he posted a double-double with a team-high 25 points, while also tying for the game-high of 13 rebounds. Teammate Ricardo Dixson also posted a double-double, netting 17 points and snatching 13 boards, and Tyler Harts added 13 points and two rebounds. Kofi Mends contributed 11 points and four rebounds, and Matthew Quinones scored nine points and led all players with 12 assists.

Back-and-forth, competitive action was on display in the opening 18 minutes of the contest. Trailing 9-7 just 4:56 in, Perez scored five consecutive points (draining a triple and adding another bucket) to put Medgar Evers ahead 12-9. After Harts tied the game with a long triple, Perez drained a mid-range jumper to put the hosts back up, 14-12, with 13:32 remaining in the first half.

The pendulum then swung Lehman's way, as the visitors scored seven straight (courtesy of a bucket apiece from Harts and Ndiaye, and a fast-break triple from Harts) to leap ahead, 19-14. The Lightning took a 29-18 advantage with 8:22 remaining the session, but the Cougars would cut into that deficit, pulling to within seven multiple times (31-24, 33-26, and 35-28), before Lehman finished the half on a 7-2 run to take a 42-30 edge into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Lightning needed just 89 seconds to significantly increase its lead, as buckets by Harts, Quinones, and Dixon pushed Lehman's edge to 18 (48-30). From that point forward, Medgar Evers never trailed by any fewer than 16 points, as Lehman's 27-point margin of victory (92-65) turned out to be its largest lead of the contest.

Lehman College was the more efficient team shooting the basketball, as the Lightning earned a conversion rate of 47.8 percent (32-67) from the floor. On the flip side, the Cougars were able to shoot 38.3 percent from the field (23-60). In a contest that featured notable physicality, the teams combined for 54 free throw attempts, with the Cougars draining 71.4 percent from the stripe (15-21), and the Lightning misfiring on 13 (20-33, 60.6 percent).

The Lightning held a commanding 54-26 edge on the glass, while also dishing 24 assists to Medgar Evers' 14. The Cougars held a 6-3 edge in steals, and the teams registered three blocked shots apiece. Both squads were excellent at protecting the basketball, as Lehman committed just seven turnovers, while Medgar Evers only had nine miscues.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Friday evening, as the Cougars will welcome the Brooklyn College Bulldogs to the Cougars Cave for another CUNYAC clash. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
