Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars put forth best effort of 2025-2026 campaign, but fall to CUNYAC foe Brooklyn in heartbreaker, 76-74

The Cougars' men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker on Friday evening, falling to CUNYAC foe Brooklyn College by a score of 76-74. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, Medgar Evers dipped a mark of 0-14 on the 2025-2026 campaign (0-4 CUNYAC), while the Bulldogs improved their record to 5-9 on the year (3-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, senior Michael Perez continued his stellar season, tying for the game-high of 21 points while draining three triples, and connecting on six of his eight attempts from the stripe. He also snatched three rebounds, as well. Joash Beaton was strong all evening, scoring 19 points in 27 minutes while also collecting a pair of rebounds, and Ahmed Toure posted a double-double, scoring 11 points and collecting a game-high 16 rebounds. His five assists were also a team-high for Medgar Evers.

Pacing the visiting Bulldogs was Herbert Gary, as he tied for the game-high of 21 points, and drained what turned out to be the game-winning layup with 0.3 seconds remaining. In addition, he led all Brooklyn players with 12 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. Abdoulaye Gueye added 18 points, four boards, and four assists, and Muneer Ibrahem finalized his evening with 14 points and two assists. Finally, it was D'Aze Hunter putting forth a nice all-round game for the Bulldogs, as he scored nine points, snatched six boards, and led all players with six assists.

In what was a super competitive CUNYAC game in front of a fired-up crowd, the first half featured five lead changes, with the latter of those pendulum swings coming when Brooklyn's Gueye connected on a triple to give his team a 24-23 advantage with 7:31 left in the half.
Over the ensuing 3:44, the visitors would put together a 12-2 burst that bumped their advantage to 11, 36-35, with 3:47 left in the opening half. Hunter led the charge for Brooklyn during that aforementioned run with seven points.

The Cougars rallied back after Brooklyn's surge, as Medgar Evers finished the half on a 14-7 run to inch to within four (43-39) as the buzzer sounded on the opening 20 minutes of basketball. Perez netted the first 10 points of that run, with Beaton scoring the final four, including a bucket just before the buzzer.

Medgar Evers spent the opening 10:06 of the second half trying to catch the Bulldogs, and finally did when Omari Hinds connected on a freebee to deadlock the CUNYAC clash at 58 apiece. The Cougars would take the lead 19 seconds later (with 10:35 remaining) when Beaton would drain a free throw, as Medgar snatched a 59-58 edge.

Over the course of the next 10:28 of basketball, the teams would exchange the lead seven times, with neither squad taking a greater advantage than six points during that span. Down 74-73 with seven seconds remaining, Perez split a pair of free throws to tie the game, prompting a Bulldogs timeout.

Coming out the timeout, Brooklyn ran a beautiful play, as Hunter sped the ball up the court and drove baseline. While doing so, he drew a double team, which left Gary wide open in the paint. Hunter zipped the ball to Gary, who converted on the layup to put the Bulldogs up 76-74 with 0.3 left. That essentially ended the game, as Medgar Evers had no timeouts, and Perez's 90-foot desperation heave at the buzzer was off the mark, and likely would not have counted anyway.

Medgar Evers lost the game despite shooting a higher percentage from the floor that Brooklyn, as the Cougars earned a stellar conversion rate of 48.2 percent (27-56). The hosts also drained seven of 17 shots from downtown (41.2 percent), but the Cougars struggled at the line, connecting on just 59.1 percent of their opportunities there (13-22). On the flip side, Brooklyn College connected on 43.6 percent of its shots from the floor (24-55), and six out of 16 from long range (37.5 percent). The Bulldogs' follies at the line almost cost them, as the visitors misfired on 13 freebees (22-25, 62.9 percent).

The CUNYAC foes were deadlocked at 35 rebounds apiece on the evening, but Brooklyn College held an 18-13 edge on the glass, and an 11-5 advantage in steals. Medgar Evers held a modest 2-1 advantage in swatted shots, and the Bulldogs won the turnover battle, committing 13 miscues, while the Cougars finished with 16.

Medgar Evers will get right back at it on Monday evening, as the Cougars will welcome Connecticut College to Brooklyn, NY. Start-time for the non-conference affair is scheduled for 5:30pm.
