Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Michael Perez scores game-high 24 points, Cougars nearly rally from 23-point deficit before falling to York, 72-66

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team nearly rallied back from a 23-point deficit, but ultimately fell on Friday evening, losing to CUNYAC foe York College by a score of 72-66. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers is now 0-8 on the 2025-2026 campaign (0-1 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals recorded their first victory, bumping to 1-6 (1-0 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Michael Perez put forth one of the best games of his Medgar Evers career, draining nine of his 16 shots, including four triples, to finish with a game-high 24 points. He also added four assists and three rebounds, as well. Ahmed Toure posted a double-double with 15 points, 12 boards, a game-high five blocked shots, three steals, and two assists, and Omari Hinds finalized his evening with 11 points, five boards, and two dimes.

Christopher Smith paced the victorious Cardinals, as he posted a double-double with a team-best 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Joshua Jackman hit some clutch free throws down the stretch (9-10 FT), as he finished with 15 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, and Jonte Wallace contributed 12 points, a game-high seven steals, five rebounds, and two assists. Finally, Babacar Gueye recorded 10 points on the night.

With the game knotted at six apiece in the early stages, Hinds converted on a bucket while drawing a foul. He would drain the ensuing free throw to give the Cougars a 9-6 advantage just 3:42 into the game. York responded to the early adversity in a big way, putting together a 30-4 run over the next 8:11 of action to take its biggest advantage of the night, a 23-point lead (36-13). Smith and Gueye scored eight points apiece during that aforementioned spurt.

Later, trailing 43-24 with 3:41 remaining in the opening half, the Cougars put together a 16-2 run to slice the Cardinals' advantage to just six points (45-39) as time expired on the opening session. Perez netted half of the Cougars' points during that stretch, with Trevonne Tcha adding five.

The pendulum that had swung the Cougars' way in the latter stages of the opening half whipped back in York's direction to open the second stanza, as the Cardinals used a 10-0 spurt to snatch a 55-39 edge with 17:04 to go. Wallace netted six of York's 10 points during that charge.

Refusing to wilt, the Cougars went on an 11-0 run over a span of 6:52 to inch to within five (55-50) with 10:56 remaining in the CUNYAC clash. Hinds scored five points during that run, with Perez and Toure adding three apiece. Shortly later, a converted bucket by Tour pulled Medgar Evers to within a pair (57-55) with nine minutes remaining.

Perez' conversion with 4:08 left made it 61-59 in favor of York, but the Cougars were only able to convert on one more field goal the rest of the way, while the Cardinals converted on five free throws down the stretch to ice the game and hold off the hosts.

Both teams shot under 40 percent for the evening, with the Cougars converting on 37.7 percent of their attempts (23-61), and the Cardinals earning a conversion rate of 34.2 percent (26-76). York held a slim 48-45 edge on the glass, while also swiping 18 steals to Medgar Evers' 11. The Cougars held a 12-6 edge in blocks, while also dishing 14 assists compared to 11 for the visitors. York won the turnover battle convincingly, committing just 15 miscues, while Medgar Evers had 26 on the night.

The Cougars will look to capture a victory on Sunday afternoon, as Medgar Evers will travel to the Kennedy Gymnasium in Purchase, NY to take on non-conference foe Manhattanville University. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
