Jonathan Grimsley's herculean effort (32 points, 10 rebounds) leads Cougars to CUNYAC upset victory over Bearcats

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team picked up a fantastic upset victory on Tuesday evening, defeating the Baruch College Bearcats by a score of 84-80. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, the Cougars exponentially increased their chances of qualifying for the CUNYAC postseason, improving to a mark of 6-17 on the season (4-8 CUNYAC). The Bearcats dipped to a record of 13-10 on the year, and 10-2 in conference action.

In the victory for the Cougars, Jonathan Grimsley put forth a tremendous effort, connecting on 14 of his 21 shot attempts and finishing with a game-high 32 points. He also registered a team-high of 10 rebounds and tied for the game-high of three steals. Daniel McCollum put forth a strong performance, scoring 14 points (6-12 FG), dishing four assists, grabbing three rebounds, and tying for the game-high of three steals. Andre Evans Jr. finalized his evening with 13 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, and Ahmed Toure contributed nine points, nine boards, and three assists.

Baruch was paced by Gerard Nicholson, as he connected on all 14 of his free throw attempts, scoring a team-high 23 points. Brandon Goldberg posted a double-double, scoring 14 points, snatching a game-high 16 rebounds, and dishing three assists, and Trevon Coppin netted 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished five assists.

The Bearcats raced out to a 12-0 advantage in the opening 3:25 of action, with Coppin leading the charge during that run with five points. Later, Baruch took its biggest lead of the game, a 16-point advantage (27-11), following a pair of converted free throws by Nicholson. The Bearcats led 35-20 with 7:47 remaining in the opening half before the pendulum then swung towards the Cougars.

Grimsley scored eight consecutive points to help Medgar Evers pull to within seven (35-28) with 6:03 remaining in the session. After Baruch's Gordon Jack connected on a triple to momentarily halt the Cougars' momentum, the hosts finished the half on a 15-7 run to pull to within two (45-43) after 20 minutes of action. During that aforementioned run, Grimsley netted eight points, while McCollum added seven.

After a converted layup by Toure to start the half knotted the game at 45-all, the Bearcats scored eight of the next 10 points of the game to take a 55-47 lead. Coppin and Nicholson scored four points apiece during that spurt. Momentum then swung the other way, as Medgar Evers responded with a 9-1 run to tie the game at 56 apiece. McCollum, who started heating up in the latter stages of the opening half, was responsible for five points during this latest run.

Medgar Evers took its first lead of the game on a made layup by Grimsley with 10:37 left, as the Cougars went up 62-61. Trevonne Cha's bucket helped the hosts extend their lead to 64-61, before a 9-0 Baruch run catapulted the Bearcats to a 70-64 advantage with 7:28 to go.

Over the ensuing 1:47, Medgar Evers scored eight consecutive points, including four by Grimsley, to take a 72-70 edge. After Baruch scored the next four points to take a 74-72 lead, Grimsley gave the home team the lead for good (75-74) by draining a long triple with 3:34 left. Down the stretch, Toure scored five points, and Evans Jr. scored four, as the Cougars outscored the Bearcats 9-6 the rest of the way to account for the four-point win (84-80).

The Cougars were the more efficient team shooting the basketball on the night, converting on 48.6 percent of their attempts from the floor, while Baruch earned a conversion rate of 40.3 percent (25-62). The Bearcats won the battle on the glass, snatching 46 boards to Medgar Evers' 41, but the Cougars held a 13-7 advantage in steals, and a 25-21 edge in assists. Medgar Evers committed just 12 miscues, while Baruch had 16 on the night.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Friday evening, as the Cougars will make the short trip to Brooklyn College for a CUNYAC Battle of Brooklyn with the Bulldogs. Start-time for the CUNYAC battle is scheduled for 7:15pm.
