Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars use hearty effort to put scare into Bloodhounds, but John Jay escapes with 66-63 CUNYAC victory

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team dropped its CUNYAC and regular season finale on Tuesday evening, falling to the John Jay College Bloodhounds by a score of 66-63. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 3-17 on the 2024-2025 campaign, and 3-11 in CUNYAC action. The Bloodhounds improved their record to 11-14, and 9-5 in conference competition.

With this evening's results, the Cougars locked themselves into the No. 6 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Women's Basketball Tournament thanks to Hunter College's victory over York. Medgar Evers will travel to the West Quad Gymnasium to battle the No. 3 seeded of Brooklyn College at 1:00pm on Saturday. That same day, No. 4 seeded John Jay will host No. 5 seeded Lehman

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, Alexis Davis scored a team-high 15 points, connecting on six out of 11 shots, and three of four at the free throw line. She also collected eight rebounds, as well, before departing in the final minutes with an injury. Sheily Quezada netted 13 points while collecting seven rebounds, dishing four assists, and leading all players with three blocked shots, and Jennifer Metra scored 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished five dimes, and tallied a game-high four steals. Nana Samake drained four of her seven shots to finish with 10 points, and Aaliyah Lyons nearly posted a double-double, scoring nine points, collecting 10 rebounds, and dishing a game-high six assists.

Ashley Zeolla paced the Bloodhounds in their victory, scoring 21 points (9-14 FT) and grabbing nine rebounds while dishing two assists. Michaela Lattimore posted a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. She also tallied three steals and dished two assists, and Briana Minick and Essence Richardson scored eight and seven points, respectively.

In what was a very competitive game throughout, Medgar Evers jumped out to an early 6-0 advantage in the opening 58 seconds thanks to a pair of buckets by Davis, and a hoop by Quezada. The Cougars led by as many as 10 points in the opening quarter (22-12), and led 22-14 after 10 minutes of action. Quezada finished with six points in the opening quarter, with Samake and Britonya Lloyd scoring four points apiece.

After Quezada's bucket 12 seconds into the quarter gave Medgar Evers a 24-14 advantage, John Jay put together a 13-1 run over a span of 5:17 to snatch a 27-25 advantage with 4:31 left in the half. Lattimore scored eight straight points during that spurt to pace the visitors and give John Jay the lead. The pendulum then swung the Cougars' way, as Medgar Evers finished the half on a 10-2 run (Davis' four points highlighted that aforementioned run) to take a 35-29 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The most lopsided quarter of the evening was the third, as John Jay College outscored Medgar Evers 23-10 in the period to take a 52-45 advantage after 30 minutes of action. The Cougars converted on just three field goals in the quarter, including one apiece by Lyons, Samake, and Jennifer Metra. Zeolla (five points) and Lattimore (four points) were the primary contributors for the Bloodhounds in period three.

In the fourth quarter, it appeared as though John Jay may start to pull away, as the visitors led 58-47 with 8:20 left, but a ferocious 16-4 run, capped off by a made jumper by Quezada, gave the Cougars a 63-62 advantage with 1:19 left. Quezada, Davis, Samake, and Lyons scored four points apiece for the hosts during that run.

Unfortunately for Medgar Evers, the Bloodhounds would score the final four points of the game, courtesy of a bucket and a pair of drained free throws by Zeolla. The Cougars missed both of their shot attempts and turned the ball over inside the final 79 seconds, as John Jay held on for a three-point CUNYAC triumph.

John Jay was the more efficient team shooting the basketball, as the Bloodhounds connected on 37.1 percent of its attempts from the floor (23-62) compared to a 34.7 percent conversion rate for Medgar Evers (26-75). The Cougars held edges in rebounding (58-46), assists (19-13), and blocked shots (4-2), but the Bloodhounds registered 10 steals compared to six for the hosts. John Jay narrowly won the turnover battle, committing 15 miscues to Medgar Evers' 16.
