Cougars show grit, toughness in Tuesday evening's four-set, non-conference defeat at York College

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball match suffered a tough loss on Tuesday evening, falling to the Cardinals of York College in four sets, by scores of 10-25, 25-16, 22-25, and 23-25. The non-conference clash took place in Jamaica, Queens. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-3 on the 2025 campaign, while York evened its mark at 1-1.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, Sariyah Brumaire notched team-highs of five kills, 13 digs, and four assists. Aliyah Chapman contributed four kills, six digs, and a match-high four service aces, and Jennifer Metra finalized her evening with four kills, seven digs, a pair of aces, and two helpers. Brianna Drummond added five digs and two aces, and finally, Maritza Argueta registered two aces and three digs.

For the Cardinals, Zia Lefebvre piled match-bests of 11 kills and 16 digs. She also tied for the team-high of three service aces, and registered wo digs. Jaymie Mateo finalized her evening with eight kills and three digs. Madison Plaza recorded six kills and three service aces, and setter Samantha Panameno finished with a match-high 25 assists.

In the opening set, with York College trailing 2-1, the Cardinals raced ahead with a 15-2 run to snatch a commanding 16-4 advantage. Mateo, Lefebvre, and Simranjit Kaur all contributed service aces during that aforementioned spurt for the hosts.
Moments later, trailing 18-5, Medgar Evers rattled off five consecutive points (with the latter two points coming courtesy of a Metra kill and an ace by Argueta) to inch to within eight, 18-10. The Cardinals then finished the set by scoring the final seven points, highlighted by Panameno's kill and pair of aces.

Medgar Evers held a 14-11 advantage in the second set of the evening, before the Cougars started to put some distance between themselves and the Cardinals, scoring seven straight points (highlighted by three Chapman aces), as the visitors took a commanding 21-11 edge. After York collected five of the ensuing eight points to cut to within eight (24-16), Medgar Evers finished off the set victory via an attack error by Mateo.

A pair of kills from Mateo gave the Cardinals a quick 5-0 advantage in the third set. Later, Yoanne Boadji's service ace put York up seven, 11-4. Later in the set, the Cardinals held a seemingly comfortable 19-10 edge before the Cougars would start their push.

A 6-0 run by Medgar Evers brought the visitors to within three, 19-16. That aforementioned run was sparked by two kills by Brumaire, and a pair of aces by Metra. The pendulum then swung towards the hosts, as York collected the next four points via a Kaur kill, an attack error by Drummond, a service ace by Shaday Torres, and an attack error by Chapman.

Things looked bleak for the Cougars after York's 4-0 spurt, but Medgar Evers continued to claw its way back into the set. Two Cardinals errors and a kill by Brumaire brought the visitors to within four (23-19). After a Lefebvre kill put the Cardinals on the cusp of a 2-1 leads in sets, the Cougars scored the next three points, the latter of those courtesy of a Brumaire ace. York then clinched the set on the next serve, as Brumaire's serve went into the net.

In the fourth and final set of the evening, a 6-5 Cougars advantage quickly turned into an 11-7 York lead, as the Cardinals' 6-1 run was sparked by Lefebrve, who notched a kill and an ace. York eventually took a 14-8 lead, but the Cougars went on a major run.

Trailing by six, 14-8, the Cougars outscored the Cardinals 9-2 over the next 11 points to catapult ahead by a score of 17-16. Drummond and Chapman registered aces during that run, with Chapman also contributing a kill. The teams alternated the next four points, before York broke that pattern on a kill by Mateo, giving the Cardinals a 20-19 edge. A kill by Chapman squared the set at 20-all.

A kill and a service ace by Plaza gave York a 22-20 advantage, but the Cougars responded with three straight points, courtesy of three Cardinals attack errors, to take a 23-22 advantage. York then capped the set and the match by scoring the next three points, thanks to a kill by Lefebvre, an attach error by Metra, and a bad set by Chapman.

For the match, York College hit .055 (37-31-109), while Medgar Evers hit in the negative. The Cardinals held slim advantages in digs (40-36) and service aces (14-11), but the Cougars compiled four blocks, while York had none.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars welcome the Bloodhounds of John Jay College to the Cougars Cave. Start-time for the CUNYAC battle is scheduled for 6:00pm.
